Quinta do Noval Vintage Port 2021 is a sweet Douro fortified wine from Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Cão grown on schist slopes. It tastes like cassis, blackberry and violet, with anise curling through the finish. The 2021 has Noval’s scented, dark-fruited stamp. Two years in large oak pipes add a quiet cedar note.
About the Wine
Quinta do Noval Vintage Port 2021 comes from sustainable Douro vineyards rooted in schist, with a blend of Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca alongside Tinta Roriz and Tinta Cão. Noval’s home quinta sits in the Vale de Mendiz near Pinhão, and that estate setting is part of the wine’s identity. In this 2021, the fruit feels dark and floral, with a dry mineral edge underneath. The blend gives each grape a clear role, with Touriga Nacional for violet and Touriga Franca for black berry flesh. Tinta Roriz adds grip and Tinta Cão adds a lifted spice note.
As a Vintage Port, this is a sweet fortified wine at 20% alcohol. Fermentation is stopped with grape spirit, leaving deep color and natural grape sweetness in a thick young texture. The 2021 then aged for approximately two years in large oak pipes before bottling, in line with Vintage Port regulations. After that short life in wood, a cedar-leaf accent sits beside the cassis and blackberry core. A faint herbal edge sits under the black currant fruit after the time in oak.
Tasting Notes
The first pour is almost opaque at the core, with cassis, blackberry compote and blueberry skin filling the glass before the spirit shows as gentle heat. Air brings candied violet and aniseed, then licorice root, cedar leaf and a warm dusting of crushed schist that feels very Noval. The palate is sweet and full-bodied, with dense black fruit packed around polished tannin and the warming power of 20% alcohol drawn into the long finish. Touriga Nacional leads with floral lift, Touriga Franca adds dark berry breadth, and Tinta Roriz gives a firm bite to this young 2021 Quinta do Noval Vintage Port. The long aftertaste leaves black currant paste, violet sugar and anise over a grip that will deepen in bottle; drink from 2025 to 2065.
Food Pairing
Serve Quinta do Noval Vintage Port 2021 in small glasses with blue-veined cheese, aged Cheddar or a nutty Portuguese São Jorge; its black currant sweetness and tannin take on salt and fat. With dessert, choose dark chocolate torte or sea-salt chocolate truffles, then add a blackberry and almond tart for an echo of the wine’s cassis and blueberry side. For a regional Portuguese idea, pour it with Queijo da Serra da Estrela, toasted walnuts and fig paste. Roasted figs with anise, walnut cake or a dense chocolate mousse suit the wine’s violet scent, 20% warmth and long young-Port grip. Small pours make sense here; this 2021 has enough sweetness and structure for a long cheese course after dinner.
Producer
Quinta do Noval is unusual among famous Port names: the quinta itself sits at the center of the label, and the vineyard identity stays visible from the first glance at the bottle to the last scented pour. The property lies in the Vale de Mendiz near Pinhão, and its steep schist terraces are the reference point for a Douro Vintage Port with a recognizable dry stone accent in a young year like 2021. The estate is also known for Nacional, a tiny ungrafted-vine parcel that appears in selected declarations and keeps attention fixed on individual plots inside this single historic quinta above the Pinhão valley. The main Quinta do Noval Vintage Port carries the estate name in large type, and the 2021 shows that source through violet perfume and black fruit, with fine-grained grip and a cedar-flecked finish after a day open. Under AXA Millésimes and Christian Seely, Noval has kept a strong focus on selection, with young Vintage Port spending its early life in large wood before bottling and then developing for decades. In this 2021 bottle, the concrete Noval signature is Vale de Mendiz schist with sweet black fruit, anise and a poised structure that points far beyond the first decade in a cool cellar.
