Description
Opus One Overture is the second wine of the legendary Opus One estate in Oakville, created from one of the most celebrated partnerships in modern wine history: Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi. Unlike the flagship wine, Overture is a non-vintage blend drawn from several recent years, crafted to capture the Opus One style in a more approachable and generous form.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Overture shows the deep, polished color you would expect from a Napa Valley red built around Bordeaux varieties. The nose is expressive and layered, with ripe blackcurrant and cherry lifted by aromas of coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla, and well-integrated oak.
The palate is smooth, serious, and inviting, offering concentrated dark fruit wrapped in supple tannins and a rounded, elegant texture. While it is already approachable on release, it has the structure and depth to develop further over the next several years.
Production
Overture is made from the classic Bordeaux varieties grown across four distinct parcels in Oakville, Napa Valley, a terroir particularly well suited to Cabernet-based blends. The grapes are hand-harvested and rigorously sorted both in the vineyard and in the cellar after destemming. Fermentation includes around 18 days of skin contact, followed by approximately 18 months of maturation in new French oak barrels before clarification with fresh egg whites and bottling.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent partner for grilled ribeye, roast lamb, beef tenderloin, or rich mushroom dishes. Serve at 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes if you want the aromas to open fully and the tannins to soften.
Producer
Opus One was born from a historic meeting between Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi in 1970, leading to the first vintage in 1979 and the release of the first wines in 1982. Today it stands as one of California’s most iconic and prestigious estates, known for its refined Bordeaux-inspired wines and consistently outstanding quality from Napa Valley's Oakville district.
