Description
Luis Seabra Vinhos Granito Cru Dão 2023 is a refined Portuguese white that showcases the elegance and mineral precision of the Dão region. Crafted from native varieties Bical, Encruzado and Sercial, it offers a tense, stony profile that will appeal to lovers of terroir-driven, food-friendly whites. Part of Seabra’s acclaimed “Granito Cru” series, this cuvée is all about expressing pure granite soils with clarity and restraint, rather than overt winemaking polish.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Granito Cru Dão 2023 is pale straw with greenish reflections, signaling freshness and youth. The nose is delicate yet detailed, opening with citrus zest, green apple and white peach, layered with fennel, fresh herbs, chalk dust and a subtle saline edge. Hints of white flowers and crushed stone emerge with air, underlining its cool-climate, granite-driven character.
On the palate, the wine is linear, vibrant and finely textured, with a core of lemon, lime and crisp pear wrapped in a lively, mouthwatering acidity. The mid-palate brings more depth with notes of stone fruit, almond skin and a discreet creaminess from aging on the lees, balanced by a firm mineral backbone. The finish is long, dry and savory, marked by a gentle bitterness in the best sense—think citrus pith and tonic—giving it superb gastronomic appeal. Enjoyable now for its tension and precision, it also has the structure to develop elegantly over the next 5–7 years, gaining complexity, nuttiness and more pronounced tertiary nuances.
Production
The Granito Cru Dão 2023 comes from carefully selected vineyards rooted in the Dão’s poor, decomposed granite soils at altitude, where cool nights preserve acidity and aromatic freshness. Yields are kept low and grapes are harvested by hand to ensure only perfectly healthy bunches make it to the winery. In keeping with Luis Seabra’s low-intervention philosophy, the fruit is gently pressed, fermentation proceeds with indigenous yeasts, and the wine is aged on fine lees in neutral vessels (often older oak or large-format barrels) to build texture without masking the purity of the fruit or the granite imprint. Minimal handling and restrained use of sulphur allow the wine to clearly reflect its origin and vintage.
Food & Serving
This Dão white is a natural partner for the table, especially with seafood and delicately prepared dishes. Try it with grilled or baked white fish, octopus, simply cooked prawns, steamed shellfish, or seared scallops, as well as roast chicken with herbs, vegetable risottos, or goat’s cheese and mild cow’s milk cheeses. Serve at 9–11°C to highlight its precision and mineral edge; slightly warmer (around 12°C) if you prefer more aromatic expression. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes in a medium-sized white wine carafe can help the wine open up, especially in its youth, bringing out additional floral and savory notes.
Producer
Luis Seabra Vinhos is the personal project of Luis Seabra, one of Portugal’s most respected winemakers, known for his work in revealing the country’s extraordinary terroirs through low-intervention, site-specific wines. After many years as chief winemaker for a major Douro estate, Seabra founded his own label to focus on old vines, native grapes and transparent winemaking across regions such as Douro, Dão and Vinho Verde. From his base in Cepões, he has become a benchmark figure for modern Portuguese wine, earning international acclaim for precise, mineral-driven whites and layered, soulful reds that emphasize origin over opulence. The Granito Cru series, including this Dão bottling, is a cornerstone of his portfolio, highlighting the nuance and energy of wines grown on granite soils.
