Description
Lis Neris Friuli Isonzo Sauvignon Picol 2022 is a refined expression of Sauvignon Blanc from one of Friuli-Venezia Giulia’s benchmark producers. This is not your typical grassy Sauvignon; instead, it shows depth, structure and a distinctly mineral-driven character shaped by the Isonzo terroir. Crafted to showcase the ‘Friulian style’ of Sauvignon Blanc, it bridges aromatic precision with real elegance and length.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Sauvignon Picol is pale straw with bright green reflections, signaling freshness and youth. The nose is layered and precise, offering notes of ripe citrus, white peach and green plum alongside hints of elderflower, sage, tomato leaf and wet stone, with a saline lift that recalls sea breeze.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied for Sauvignon Blanc, with a tightly knit structure supported by crisp, mouthwatering acidity. Flavors of grapefruit, lime zest and orchard fruits are framed by subtle herbal nuances and a marked mineral core, giving both tension and complexity. The finish is long, clean and slightly saline, with a chalky, almost stony feel that invites another sip. Enjoyable now for its vibrancy, it has the concentration and balance to evolve gracefully for 5–7 years from the vintage, gaining more complexity and textural richness with time in bottle.
Production
The grapes for Sauvignon Picol are sourced from vineyards on the right bank of the Isonzo River, where warm, gravelly soils store heat by day and release it at night, helping the grapes achieve full ripeness and structure. The climate is defined by sharp diurnal temperature shifts, created by cool Balkan winds and moderating Mediterranean influences from the nearby sea; this interplay preserves acidity and intensifies aromatics. Harvesting is typically done by hand to ensure only perfectly healthy, optimally ripe clusters are selected. In the cellar, Lis Neris focuses on gentle pressing and a controlled, cool fermentation to capture purity of fruit and terroir expression. The wine is then aged on fine lees, often in stainless steel and/or large neutral vessels, to build texture and complexity without masking the grape’s natural character with heavy oak.
Food & Serving
This Sauvignon Blanc is a natural partner for refined seafood dishes—think seared scallops, grilled prawns, oysters, and delicately prepared white fish, especially with citrus or herb-based sauces. It also pairs beautifully with goat’s cheese, fresh mozzarella, vegetable risottos, asparagus, and aromatic herb-based dishes such as basil pesto or tarragon chicken. Serve at 8–10°C (46–50°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatics. A brief decant of 15–20 minutes, or simply allowing the wine to open in the glass, can help reveal additional layers of minerality and complexity.
