Description
The 1976 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese from Jos. Christoffel Jr. (Christoffel-Prüm) is a rare Mosel sweet wine from one of the region’s most celebrated vineyard sites. Made from individually selected, exceptionally concentrated grapes, it represents the extraordinary ripeness and balance associated with the Trockenbeerenauslese classification and the exceptional 1976 vintage.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this mature Riesling shows a deep golden hue, potentially enriched by decades of bottle age. Its complex bouquet is marked by honey, dried and ripe apricot, peach and citrus, with the evolved character typical of a well-preserved aged sweet wine. On the palate, it is rich and full-bodied, combining pronounced sweetness with concentrated fruit and a lingering finish. This is a mature wine best approached as a drinking occasion in its own right; its remaining aging potential will depend greatly on provenance and storage conditions.
Production
The grapes come from the steep, slate-influenced Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard on the Mosel, a site renowned for producing intensely aromatic and long-lived Riesling. For a Trockenbeerenauslese, grapes are left on the vine until they reach extraordinary concentration, traditionally through noble-rot development and dehydration, before being selected with great care. The resulting wine is naturally sweet, richly textured and capable of extended bottle maturation.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled, at approximately 8–10°C, allowing a little time in the glass for its mature aromas to unfold. Its sweetness and acidity make it a luxurious partner for foie gras, pâté, blue cheese and fruit-based desserts such as apricot tart or crème brûlée. Decanting is not usually necessary, but carefully standing the bottle upright before opening and serving gently can help preserve this historic wine, particularly if sediment is present.
Producer
Jos. Christoffel Jr., also known as Christoffel-Prüm, is associated with the long-established Riesling tradition of the Mosel and with wines from prestigious vineyards around Ürzig and Wehlen. The estate’s bottlings are valued for their site expression, balance and capacity to mature gracefully, making this 1976 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Trockenbeerenauslese a distinctive example of historic Mosel sweet wine.
