Description
Joh. Jos. Prüm’s Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Beerenauslese Goldkapsel 1976 is a rare and highly collectible Mosel sweet wine from one of Germany’s most celebrated Riesling estates. Made from individually selected, botrytis-affected grapes and marked by its distinctive Goldkapsel, this exceptional late-harvest wine combines remarkable concentration with the freshness and longevity for which the Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard is renowned.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, reflecting its considerable age and natural sweetness. Its mature bouquet opens with aromas of ripe peach, apricot, honey and candied fruit, complemented by the nuanced, mineral character associated with the steep slate soils of the Mosel.
On the palate, it is rich, luscious and beautifully balanced, with intense sweetness lifted by vibrant Riesling acidity. Layers of stone fruit, honey and dried fruit lead to a long, persistent finish with a subtle mineral note. A well-cellared bottle from this outstanding 1976 vintage can offer extraordinary drinking pleasure today, while retaining further aging potential depending on its storage history.
Production
The grapes were sourced from the steep, sun-exposed slopes of Wehlener Sonnenuhr, a renowned Mosel vineyard whose slate-rich soils help give the wines both mineral depth and freshness. Beerenauslese requires the careful selection of individually overripe, often botrytis-affected berries, harvested by hand at exceptional ripeness. The Goldkapsel designation indicates an especially prized selection, made only when conditions and fruit quality justify it.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled, around 8–10°C, allowing the wine’s aromas and complexity to develop in the glass. It is a natural match for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, pâtisserie and blue or mature cheeses, but can also be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative aperitif. Decanting is not usually necessary; for this mature wine, gentle handling and careful pouring are preferable, although a short period in a small decanter may help if sediment is present.
Producer
Joh. Jos. Prüm is one of the landmark names of the Mosel, with family winemaking roots in the region and a reputation built on precise, long-lived Rieslings from prestigious vineyards. The estate is particularly associated with the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, where its wines express the combination of steep slate slopes, delicate fruit and pronounced acidity that defines great Mosel Riesling. Its Beerenauslese and Goldkapsel bottlings are sought after by collectors for their rarity, concentration and exceptional aging ability.
