Description

A rare 1973 German sweet wine from the celebrated Johannisberger Hansenberg vineyard in the Rheingau, this Riesling Eiswein-Beerenauslese combines the concentration of naturally frozen grapes with the luxurious richness of Beerenauslese. Hand-selected fruit, a prestigious vineyard origin and more than five decades of bottle age make it a compelling choice for collectors and lovers of mature dessert wines.

Tasting Notes
The wine presents a deep golden hue, reflecting its age and concentration. Its mature bouquet is marked by ripe peach, apricot and honey, with the possibility of developing further tertiary nuances in bottle over time. On the palate, it is full-bodied, sweet and richly textured, supported by the refreshing acidity that gives the wine balance and prevents the sweetness from becoming heavy. The finish is long, rounded and persistent. As a 1973 vintage, this is a mature collectible wine and its condition may vary depending on storage and provenance. Properly preserved bottles may offer remarkable complexity, while the wine is best approached with realistic expectations appropriate to its age. It is recommended to serve it soon after opening and to enjoy it carefully rather than assuming further cellaring will improve every bottle.

Production
The grapes originate from the steep slopes of Johannisberger Hansenberg, one of the Rheingau’s renowned vineyard sites, where the cool climate and Riesling’s natural acidity are well suited to producing concentrated sweet wines. The fruit was hand-selected and harvested under freezing conditions, concentrating sugars and aromas in the berries—an essential characteristic of Eiswein. The Beerenauslese classification further indicates the selection of individually overripe, botrytised or highly concentrated berries. According to the supplied information, the wine was subsequently matured in oak casks to help develop its distinctive character.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled, at approximately 8–10°C, as an aperitif or alongside desserts such as cheesecake, crème brûlée, fruit tarts or rich chocolate preparations. Its sweetness and acidity can also complement blue cheese or foie gras. Decanting is generally unnecessary for a mature sweet wine of this age; instead, stand the bottle upright before opening and pour gently to avoid disturbing any sediment. If the wine appears closed, a short period of aeration in the glass is preferable to prolonged decanting.

Producer
G. H. von Mumm is a historic German wine name associated with the Rheingau and with the production of distinguished Riesling wines. The estate’s connection with prestigious vineyards such as Johannisberger Hansenberg reflects the importance of site and long-established wine culture in the region. This 1973 Eiswein-Beerenauslese represents a particularly rare style of mature Rheingau sweet wine, combining a celebrated vineyard origin with an exceptional vintage age.
