Description

A rare 1971 sweet Riesling from the legendary Scharzhofberger vineyard, produced by Egon Müller Scharzhof and presented with the prestigious Goldkapsel. Combining the concentration associated with Beerenauslese and the freshness of Eiswein, this is a remarkable bottle for collectors and lovers of mature German dessert wines.

Tasting Notes
The wine is expected to show a deep golden hue, with the colour and texture that come from decades of careful bottle ageing. Its bouquet is intensely aromatic, suggesting ripe peach and apricot alongside honeyed tones and layers of mature sweetness. On the palate, it is rich and full-bodied, with a lively balance between sweetness and acidity. The finish is long, polished and persistent, making this a wine to savour slowly. With its age, rarity and high natural concentration, it has significant cellaring potential, although the condition of an individual bottle should always be considered.

Production
Made from Riesling grapes sourced from the renowned Scharzhofberger vineyard in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region, this wine reflects the site’s ability to produce exceptionally concentrated, long-lived sweet wines. The fruit was harvested late in the season, with the style combining Beerenauslese-level selection and Eiswein character; the description also indicates the influence of noble rot, which contributes richness and aromatic complexity. Production was limited, and the Goldkapsel designation marks this as a particularly rare and prestigious bottling.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled, at approximately 8–10°C, in small tulip-shaped dessert-wine glasses. Its sweetness and acidity make it a natural partner for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, pâtisserie and blue or mature cheeses. It can also be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative final course. Decanting is generally unnecessary, though carefully standing the bottle upright before opening can help separate any mature sediment.

Producer
Egon Müller Scharzhof is one of Germany’s most celebrated names, closely associated with the historic Scharzhof estate and the exceptional wines of the Saar. The Scharzhofberger vineyard is recognised for producing Rieslings of striking elegance, concentration and longevity, and the estate’s finest sweet wines are highly sought after internationally. This 1971 Goldkapsel bottling represents both the prestige of the producer and the remarkable ageing potential of great Saar Riesling.
