Egly-Ouriet Grand Cru Extra Brut Millésime 2017 is a characterful Champagne that combines Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with the house’s signature emphasis on structure, freshness and terroir. Made in the traditional method and sourced from Grand Cru vineyards around Ambonnay, it spends an exceptional 96 months on its lees before release.
Tasting Notes
Brilliant golden in the glass, it opens with aromas of white fruit, peach and honey, layered with sweet spice, vanilla and a hint of green tea. The palate is full and energetic, balancing concentrated fruit with freshness and a persistent, discreetly mineral finish, accented by a touch of pepper.
Extended lees ageing brings added depth and complexity, while the Extra Brut style keeps the wine poised and focused. It is built to develop gracefully over time; the supplied notes suggest potential to age for more than 25 years under suitable cellar conditions.
Production
The wine draws its character from chalk-rich Grand Cru soils around Ambonnay, where the chalk helps retain water and reflect sunlight. The estate’s vines are cultivated according to sustainable practices, and the wine is made with native yeasts for the first fermentation, followed by slow maturation in oak barrels. It then undergoes secondary fermentation in bottle and spends 96 months on the lees; it is unfiltered, preserving its texture and complexity.
Food & Serving
Serve at around 10–12°C, allowing it a little time in the glass to reveal its layers. It pairs particularly well with roast poultry, lobster, scallops and aged cheeses. Decanting is not essential, but a brief rest in a chilled carafe can help a mature bottle open up; handle gently and avoid prolonged aeration.
Producer
Egly-Ouriet is a grower Champagne producer based in Ambonnay, a village especially renowned for Pinot Noir and its chalk-rich vineyards. The estate is known for a terroir-focused approach and extended ageing on the lees, producing Champagnes with depth and a strong sense of place. The supplied product information reports a 96-point Vinous rating for this wine.
