Contratto Bacco d’Oro Brut 2022 is an Alta Langa sparkling wine made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay using the traditional method. Its long maturation on the lees brings together fine, persistent bubbles and a creamy texture, while its name recalls the winery’s 1940s tradition of hiding a 18-karat gold coin in one out of every hundred bottles.
Tasting Notes
Bright yellow in colour, with a fine, persistent perlage. The fragrant nose offers yellow apple and peach blossom, accented by a touch of honey.
Soft and creamy on the palate, it balances citrus freshness with ripe-fruit flavours and delicate notes of marzipan and petits fours. Its extended lees ageing lends an elegant, rounded finish. Enjoy it while its freshness and texture are at their most expressive; the available information does not specify a precise cellar-aging window.
Production
Made in Alta Langa, in the hills of Piedmont, Bacco d’Oro reflects the character of the area’s local soils and climate. The grapes are gently pressed to obtain only the free-run must, which undergoes its primary fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks before nine months of ageing. A second fermentation in bottle follows the traditional method, with manual riddling and at least 48 months of slow maturation on the lees. No specific harvesting method is provided.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled, around 6–8°C, as an aperitif or alongside oysters, seafood, delicate fried dishes, or soft cheeses. Its citrus lift and creamy texture also work well with roast chicken and lighter pasta dishes. Decanting is not necessary; open shortly before serving to preserve the wine’s fine mousse.
Producer
Founded in 1867, Contratto is a historic sparkling-wine house in Canelli, Piedmont, with a long association with traditional-method wines. The winery’s deep cellars and commitment to bottle ageing have helped establish its reputation in the region. Bacco d’Oro continues the house’s story through both its careful manual riddling and the gold-coin anecdote: in the 1940s, one bottle in every hundred reportedly contained a 18-karat coin beneath the capsule.
