Cloudy Bay Te Wāhi 2016 is an expressive New Zealand Pinot Noir that captures the distinctive character of Central Otago through a blend of two contrasting vineyard sites. Named after the te reo Māori word for “place”, Te Wāhi is a wine of both power and elegance, bringing together dark fruit, fine structure and a strong sense of origin.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep ruby colour, with an inviting nose of boysenberry, ripe plum and juicy cherry layered with dark chocolate, cherry liqueur and a fresh hint of crushed mint. Subtle warm spice and earthy forest-floor nuances add further depth and complexity.
On the palate, Te Wāhi 2016 is vibrant and precise, with refreshing acidity lifting its dark stone-fruit character. Notes of damson plum, black cherry and cool coffee develop across the palate, supported by silky tannins and a long, refined finish marked by dark fruit, gentle spice and minty freshness. With its combination of concentration and energy, the wine has the structure to develop gracefully over the coming years.
Production
Te Wāhi is made from fruit grown in two contrasting Central Otago sites: the steep, stony, glacial soils of Northburn contribute intensity and structure, while the ancient lakebed soils of Calvert in Bannockburn provide generous, aromatic and perfumed fruit. Cloudy Bay’s approach is deliberately gentle, allowing the distinct character of both sites to remain at the forefront while building a balanced and polished Pinot Noir.
Food & Serving
This is a natural match for roast or grilled lamb, venison and other game, as well as wild mushrooms, truffle dishes and richly flavoured winter cuisine. Serve slightly below room temperature, around 15–17°C, to preserve its freshness and aromatic lift. Decanting is not essential, but 30–60 minutes in a decanter can help the wine’s layered fruit, spice and earthy nuances unfold.
Producer
Founded in 1985, Cloudy Bay is one of New Zealand’s most internationally recognised wineries and a key name in the country’s modern wine history. Although best known for its Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, the estate also explores the distinctive potential of Pinot Noir from Central Otago. Te Wāhi reflects this broader ambition, showcasing Cloudy Bay’s focus on expressive wines shaped by site, climate and careful cellar work.
