Description

The August Anheuser Schloß Böckelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Edelbeerenauslese 1934 is a remarkably rare dessert wine from one of the Nahe’s distinguished vineyard sites. Made from individually selected, botrytis-affected Riesling grapes, this historic 0.7-litre bottle offers a unique opportunity to experience the depth and longevity of Germany’s pre-war sweet-wine tradition.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine is expected to show a deep golden hue, potentially with amber reflections that reflect its considerable age. The nose is richly developed, combining honey, dried apricot and peach with mature, delicate notes of preserved fruit and mineral nuances. The palate is sweet, full-bodied and concentrated, yet balanced by Riesling’s characteristic acidity. Flavours of honeyed stone fruit and ripe peach lead into a long, persistent finish with a subtle mineral character. At more than 90 years old, this is a fully mature collector’s wine; its condition and evolution will depend greatly on storage and provenance, so it is best enjoyed rather than held for further development.

Production
The wine comes from the Schloß Böckelheimer Felsenberg vineyard in Germany’s Nahe region, a site known for its distinctive mineral character and ability to produce elegant, long-lived Rieslings. As an Edelbeerenauslese, it was made from individually hand-selected, exceptionally ripe grapes affected by Botrytis cinerea, or noble rot. These shrivelled berries naturally concentrate sugars, acidity and flavour before being carefully pressed and fermented into a richly sweet wine.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C to preserve freshness while allowing the mature aromas to unfold. It is a natural partner for crème brûlée, cheesecake, fruit tart or fresh stone fruit, and can also complement blue cheese or foie gras. Decanting is not essential, but carefully standing the bottle upright before opening and pouring gently can help separate any sediment; a short, cautious aeration may be beneficial if the wine initially appears closed.

Producer
August Anheuser is associated with the historic Schloß Böckelheimer Felsenberg vineyard in the Nahe, a region celebrated for its expressive Rieslings and mineral-rich vineyard sites. This 1934 bottling was produced during a period of considerable political and economic upheaval in Germany, making surviving examples particularly scarce. Its age, provenance and Edelbeerenauslese classification give it special significance for collectors of historic German wines.
