Solaia is an iconic Super Tuscan from Marchesi Antinori, made at the Tenuta Tignanello estate in the heart of Chianti Classico. Its blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc brings together international richness and Tuscan character; first created in 1978, it has become one of Italy’s most celebrated wines.
Tasting Notes
The wine is described as deep and concentrated, with aromas and flavours of blackberry and cherry layered with chocolate and vanilla. On the palate, a creamy entry and lively freshness are framed by silky tannins, leading to a long, profound finish.
The 2023 vintage’s precise tasting profile and drinking window are not specified. Given its concentration and structure, it should have the capacity to develop with bottle age; the magnum format is particularly well suited to extended maturation.
Production
The grapes come from south-west-facing vineyards at Tenuta Tignanello, at 350–400 metres above sea level. Pliocene soils rich in marine fossils combine alberese, galestro and clay, while warm days and cool nights help the fruit ripen while retaining freshness. After careful hand selection, the grapes are gently destemmed and crushed, then gravity-fed into truncated-conical tanks. Fermentation and maceration take place in separate batches at controlled temperatures; the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and matures for around 18 months in new French oak barrels before the parcels are blended.
Food & Serving
Pair Solaia with richly flavoured dishes such as grilled or roasted beef, lamb, game, or slow-cooked short ribs. Its structure also suits aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C and decant for about two hours before drinking to give the wine time to open.
Producer
Marchesi Antinori is a historic Tuscan wine family whose winemaking heritage dates back to 1385. The family has played a significant role in shaping modern Italian wine, notably through the creation of Tignanello and Solaia. First produced in 1978 at the Tignanello estate, Solaia is made only in selected vintages and is widely regarded as a landmark of the Super Tuscan style.
