Description

Agrapart & Fils Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut Minéral 2019 is a chiselled, terroir-driven Champagne crafted entirely from Chardonnay grown in the house’s finest chalk-laden Grand Cru vineyards. This cuvée is celebrated for its precision, tension, and almost crystalline expression of Côte des Blancs limestone. Extra Brut in style, it offers remarkable purity and finesse, making it a benchmark grower Champagne for serious Chardonnay lovers. Minéral’s unique selling point lies in its focus on old-vine parcels from Avize and Cramant, where deep chalk soils impart striking salinity and length. First released in the 1990s, Minéral has earned a cult following among sommeliers and collectors for its ability to marry intensity with elegance, and for its consistent ability to age gracefully in bottle.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Minéral shows a pale straw to light gold hue with a fine, persistent mousse and a delicate, chalky shimmer. The bead is refined and energetic, hinting at both freshness and structure. The nose is focused and precise, opening with notes of lemon zest, green apple, and white flowers, followed by layers of crushed oyster shell, chalk dust, and subtle brioche. With air, you may find nuances of grapefruit pith, almond, and a faint smoky, flinty edge that underscores its mineral backbone. On the palate, this Champagne is taut and linear, yet concentrated, with a racy acidity that carries flavors of citrus, orchard fruits, and white stone fruits over a distinctly saline, stony core. The texture is both creamy and tensile, with a fine chalk grip that elongates the finish. Hints of hazelnut, fresh bread, and delicate spice emerge as it warms slightly in the glass, adding complexity without sacrificing its hallmark precision. The 2019 vintage offers ripe fruit depth balanced by Agrapart’s trademark freshness, suggesting excellent aging potential. Well-stored bottles should evolve beautifully over 8–12 years from vintage, developing more brioche, honey, and nutty nuances while retaining their mineral spine.

Production
Minéral is sourced exclusively from Grand Cru vineyards in Avize and Cramant in the Côte des Blancs, where pure, deep chalk subsoils and cool mesoclimate are ideal for high-class Chardonnay. The vines used for this cuvée are old, deeply rooted, and farmed with great respect for the environment, often with organic or low-intervention methods that emphasize soil health and biodiversity. Harvesting is done by hand to ensure precise selection of perfectly ripe, healthy grapes. In the cellar, Agrapart follows a minimally interventionist philosophy: gentle pressing of whole clusters, spontaneous fermentations with native yeasts, and vinification partly in neutral oak and partly in stainless steel to balance texture with clarity. The wine spends an extended period on its lees in bottle, enhancing complexity and fine mousse, before being disgorged with a very low dosage at Extra Brut level to preserve the sharp, chalky definition that gives Minéral its name.

Food & Serving
This Champagne is superb with pristine seafood: oysters, scallops, langoustines, and shellfish platters, as well as sashimi, crudo, and ceviche where its salinity and citrus cut through richness and highlight delicate flavors. It also pairs beautifully with dishes like turbot with beurre blanc, lemony grilled fish, fine goat’s cheeses, and subtly creamy poultry or veal preparations. For a more adventurous match, try it alongside caviar or lightly truffled dishes, where its tension and finesse provide a refined counterpoint. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F) to emphasize freshness, allowing the glass to warm slightly in hand to reveal further depth. A brief, gentle decant or simply pouring into a larger-bowled white-wine or Champagne glass can help the aromas open, especially if the bottle is young, but long aeration is not necessary.

Producer
Founded in the late 19th century and based in Avize, Agrapart & Fils is one of Champagne’s most respected grower-producers, known for its obsessive focus on terroir and Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs. As a récoltant-manipulant, Agrapart works almost exclusively with estate-grown fruit, giving them meticulous control from vine to bottle. Over the past few decades, the domaine has become a reference point for mineral-driven, low-dosage Champagnes that highlight the nuances of chalk soils. Their reputation within the Champagne region is formidable: Agrapart is frequently cited by critics and sommeliers alongside the top grower names, and cuvées like Minéral, Avizoise, and Vénus have achieved near-cult status. With a philosophy rooted in careful vineyard work, restrained cellar techniques, and a commitment to expressing each site transparently, Agrapart has helped redefine what discerning drinkers expect from artisanal, terroir-focused Champagne.
