2017 Don Maximiano Founder’s Reserve is Viña Errázuriz’s flagship red wine, crafted to express the power and refinement of Chile’s Aconcagua Valley. A Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend, it combines ripe dark fruit with polished tannins, lively freshness and finely integrated French oak. Named after the winery’s founder, Don Maximiano Errázuriz, it represents one of Chile’s most established expressions of premium Bordeaux-style winemaking.

Tasting Notes
Deep and concentrated in appearance, the wine opens with precise aromas of cherry, raspberry, blackcurrant and blackberry. With air, the bouquet reveals violet, dark herbs, graphite, fine tobacco, cocoa, clove and subtle cedar. The overall impression is mature and concentrated, yet remarkably fresh and clearly defined. On the palate, the 2017 vintage is juicy, powerful and energetic, with ripe dark fruit supported by bright acidity and dense, polished tannins. Its substantial texture remains balanced rather than heavy, while the long finish brings back notes of blackcurrant, sour cherry, cocoa, cedar and delicate mineral spice. The wine has the structure and freshness to develop further in bottle, with considerable ageing potential.

Production
The wine comes from Aconcagua Valley, a historic Chilean region defined by intense sunlight, dry conditions and cooling night-time temperatures. These contrasts encourage slow, even ripening while preserving aromatic clarity and freshness. The blend comprises 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Malbec, 8% Carmenère, 7% Petit Verdot and 6% Cabernet Franc, with each variety contributing structure, fruit, spice, colour and floral complexity. It was matured for 22 months in French barriques, 72% of which were new, adding integrated notes of cedar, cocoa, fine toast and clove. The wine has an alcohol content of 14% by volume.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C. A careful decanting of one to two hours is recommended for younger bottles to allow the wine’s fruit, spice and tannins to unfold; more mature bottles should be decanted gently to separate any sediment and then enjoyed soon afterwards. It is an excellent match for beef tenderloin, côte de boeuf, braised lamb and game served with rich jus-based sauces. It also pairs beautifully with duck breast, mushrooms, truffles, roasted root vegetables and mature hard cheeses.
