Description

Weingut Stefan Meyer Chardonnay aus Rhodt Bio 2023 is a characterful, Burgundy‑inspired Chardonnay from the sun‑drenched vineyards of southern Pfalz. Crafted from organically grown grapes and raised in oak, it offers a sophisticated balance of ripe fruit, fine spice and vibrant freshness. This village-level Chardonnay from Rhodt clearly overdelivers in its category, echoing classic Burgundy while retaining a distinctly Pfalz identity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Chardonnay shows a bright, pale to medium straw-yellow hue with subtle golden highlights, hinting at both ripeness and time on lees. The nose opens with nutty, gently smoky aromas layered over notes of buttered popcorn and fresh brioche, followed by yellow orchard fruit—think ripe Golden Delicious apple and pear—with a touch of citrus zest and a faint floral lift. On the palate, the wine is dry, medium-bodied and finely textured, with a creamy mid-palate from extended lees contact balanced by a lively, saline acidity. Ripe apple, pear and stone-fruit flavors are intertwined with well-integrated oak tones—vanilla pod, toasted hazelnut and a whisper of spice—without feeling heavy. The finish is long, precise and slightly mineral, showing the imprint of sandstone soils and a gentle smokiness. Enjoy it now for its youthful energy, or cellar it for 3–5 years to allow the oak and nutty complexity to knit even more seamlessly into the fruit.

Production
The Chardonnay grapes for this organic cuvée come from the Rhodter vineyards Rosengarten and Schlossberg in the Pfalz, where colorful sandstone (Buntsandstein) and loamy soils provide excellent drainage, warmth and mineral tension. The fruit is hand-harvested to ensure careful selection of perfectly ripe, healthy berries. Fermentation is carried out spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, allowing the character of the terroir to shine through. The wine is then aged on its lees for around eight to ten months in a mix of differently sized oak barrels, which brings texture, subtle reduction and fine spice without overwhelming the fruit, before careful bottling with minimal intervention.

Food & Serving
This Chardonnay is a versatile partner at the table and pairs beautifully with roast chicken, veal in cream sauce, pork tenderloin, or richer seafood dishes such as seared scallops, baked salmon or lobster with beurre blanc. It also works well with mushroom risotto, truffled pasta, and soft to semi-hard cheeses like Comté, Brie or mild mountain cheeses. Serve at 10–12 °C to highlight both freshness and complexity. A short decanting of 20–30 minutes, or simply opening the bottle a bit in advance, helps the initial oak spice and smoky notes to integrate and allows the wine to show its full aromatic range.

Producer
Weingut Stefan Meyer is a family-run estate based in Rhodt unter Rietburg in the southern Pfalz, now helmed by the third generation, winemaker Stefan Meyer. Known for his admiration of Burgundy and its precision, Meyer has translated that inspiration into a focused range of terroir-driven, organically farmed wines, with Chardonnay and Pinot varieties playing a central role. Over the past years, the estate has gained a strong reputation among German wine insiders for its combination of sustainable viticulture, spontaneous fermentations and sensitive use of oak. Today, Weingut Stefan Meyer is considered one of the dynamic, quality-focused producers helping to define the modern face of Pfalz wine, particularly for elegant, cool-climate interpretations of classic Burgundian varieties.
