Description
Weingut Knipser’s Laumersheim Kirschgarten Weissburgunder 2022 is a refined expression of Pinot Blanc from Germany’s Pfalz region. It combines ripe yellow-fruit character with fresh acidity and a subtle saline edge, while its extended maturation in large oak casks adds depth and texture. The Knipser family has been making wine in Laumersheim since 1876 and was among the first in the area to bottle its own wines.
Tasting Notes
Bright and elegant in the glass, this Weissburgunder opens with inviting aromas of ripe yellow fruit, including pear and golden apple, complemented by delicate floral and mineral nuances. On the palate, it is full-bodied and rounded, with generous yellow-fruit flavours balanced by beautifully integrated acidity and a lightly savoury, saline finish.
The wine’s structure and oak maturation give it excellent depth for a Pinot Blanc, allowing it to develop further over the next several years. It can be enjoyed now for its freshness and fruit, or cellared for approximately five to eight years, where additional layers of texture and complexity may emerge.
Production
The grapes come from the Kirschgarten vineyard around Laumersheim in the northern Pfalz, an area known for its favourable climate and mineral-influenced soils. Weingut Knipser farms vineyards across Laumersheim, Großkarlbach and Dirmstein, with a total of around 75 hectares under vine. Following harvest, the wine was fermented and matured for 12 months in large 600-litre Halbstück casks and 500-litre tonneaux, a method that gives the wine breadth and subtle oak complexity without overpowering its fruit and acidity.
Food & Serving
This versatile Weissburgunder is an excellent match for roasted poultry, pork tenderloin, creamy pasta, risotto, grilled fish and shellfish. Its rounded texture also works well with mild semi-hard cheeses and vegetable dishes featuring asparagus, squash or mushrooms. Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C. Decanting is not essential, but a short 20–30 minute airing can help reveal the wine’s full aromatic and textural range, particularly when enjoyed in its youth.
Producer
Weingut Knipser has been a family-run estate in Laumersheim since 1876 and is located between Grünstadt and Bad Dürkheim in the northern Vorderpfalz. Heinz Knipser began bottling the estate’s wines in 1948, making the winery one of the region’s early pioneers of estate bottling. Today, Volker and Werner Knipser continue this progressive tradition, having introduced barrique élevage in the mid-1980s, expanded the estate’s red-wine production and planted both classic regional and international grape varieties. Their careful combination of traditional regional identity and modern cellar techniques has made Weingut Knipser one of the notable names in the Pfalz.
