Description

Spottswoode Lyndenhurst Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 is a polished, classically styled Napa Valley Cabernet that offers remarkable pedigree at a more approachable price than the estate’s flagship bottling. Crafted from a blend of estate and carefully selected grower fruit, it captures Spottswoode’s signature elegance, purity, and balance in a vibrant, earlier-drinking expression. Named after the historic Lyndenhurst estate that once occupied the property, this wine pays homage to Spottswoode’s deep roots in St. Helena and its reputation as one of Napa’s great Cabernet producers.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Lyndenhurst shows a deep garnet-purple hue, signaling both concentration and freshness. The nose is immediately expressive, layered with vivid aromas of blueberries, redcurrants, and kirsch, intertwined with notes of cedar chest, rosehip, fragrant earth, and subtle baking spice. On the palate, this is a medium to medium-plus–bodied Cabernet with an elegant, lifted profile rather than sheer power. Bright red and black fruits—think redcurrant, black cherry, and blueberry—are framed by fine-grained tannins and lively acidity, giving the wine an energetic, mouthwatering feel. Hints of graphite, tobacco leaf, and earthy minerality linger through a long, savory finish. While already beautifully approachable, this vintage has the structure to develop additional complexity over the next 8–12 years, rewarding cellaring while still offering plenty of enjoyment in its youth.

Production
Lyndenhurst is sourced from Spottswoode’s organically farmed estate vineyard in St. Helena, along with select, high-quality Napa Valley sites that share a similar commitment to meticulous viticulture. The terroir is classic northern Napa: well-drained alluvial and gravelly loam soils, warm days, and cool evenings that preserve freshness and aromatic lift. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness and carefully sorted before fermentation. The 2019 blend is composed of 77.7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9.4% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot, 4.1% Petit Verdot, and 3.8% Malbec. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel and concrete, with gentle extraction to emphasize finesse over heaviness. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (a portion new) to integrate tannins and add subtle spice and structure, without overwhelming the purity of the fruit.

Food & Serving
This refined Cabernet is extremely versatile at the table. It shines alongside classic pairings like grilled ribeye, roast lamb with herbs, and beef tenderloin, but also complements dishes such as braised short ribs, roast duck, wild mushroom risotto, or aged hard cheeses like Comté and aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) for optimal expression. Decanting for 45–60 minutes in its youth will help the wine open up aromatically and soften the tannins; with a few years of bottle age, a brief splash-decant just before serving is sufficient.

Producer
Spottswoode Estate, located on the western edge of St. Helena in Napa Valley, is one of the region’s most respected, family-owned Cabernet producers. Founded by Mary Novak in the late 1970s, the estate quickly gained acclaim for its refined, Bordeaux-influenced style of Cabernet Sauvignon and its early commitment to organic farming—practices that began in the 1980s, long before sustainability became a buzzword. Today, Spottswoode is led by the second generation, continuing a legacy of meticulous vineyard work, restrained winemaking, and wines that emphasize balance and terroir over sheer power. Frequently lauded by top critics and collectors alike, Spottswoode is widely regarded as a benchmark for elegant, ageworthy Napa Cabernet.
