Description

Michel Guignier Morgon Canon 2023 Magnum is a characterful Beaujolais red that showcases Gamay at its most expressive and unforced. Sourced from old-vine Morgon and made with a natural, hands-off approach, it offers remarkable transparency, energy, and depth. In the Canon cuvée, Guignier’s philosophy comes through clearly: a wine shaped by the vineyard rather than the cellar, with a sense of place that feels both vivid and authentic.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a vibrant ruby-purple hue. The nose is inviting and layered, with ripe cherry, wild raspberry, blackberry, dried rose petals, and gentle spice, followed by subtle notes of tea leaf, crushed stone, and forest floor. On the palate, the wine feels lively and focused, with silky texture, bright acidity, and finely drawn tannins that give shape without weight. The finish is long, lightly savory, and softly herbal, suggesting good aging potential over the next few years, especially as the fruit and mineral tones continue to knit together.

Production
The grapes come from old, low-yielding Gamay vines on the slopes around Morgon in Beaujolais, where weathered granite and schist-rich soils known as "roche pourrie" lend the wine its depth and tension. The vineyard is farmed organically with biodynamic principles, including horse-ploughing and no synthetic inputs. In the cellar, the wine is vinified with whole clusters and spontaneous fermentation using native yeasts, then raised slowly in cement and large wooden vats without temperature control, fining, filtration, or added sulfur.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile food wine that pairs beautifully with roast poultry, mushroom dishes, grilled duck, charcuterie, and medium-aged cheeses. Serve slightly chilled, around 14–16°C, to bring out the freshness and aromatic lift. Decanting is not essential, but a short aeration can help the wine open up if served young.

Producer
Michel Guignier is one of the most soulful and respected natural-leaning producers in Beaujolais, known for wines that prioritize purity, texture, and a true sense of terroir. Based in Morgon, he has built a reputation for crafting expressive Gamay through organic and biodynamic viticulture and minimal intervention winemaking. His work has helped reinforce Morgon’s standing as one of Beaujolais’ most compelling crus, especially for drinkers seeking authenticity and finesse.
