Description
Château Latour is one of Bordeaux’s most legendary names, and the 2001 vintage shows why this Pauillac first growth remains a benchmark for depth, structure, and longevity. Built around Cabernet Sauvignon with supporting Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, it combines power with remarkable refinement and a classic Left Bank sense of authority.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep garnet core with just the first signs of maturity at the rim. The nose is layered and reserved at first, opening to blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar, graphite, tobacco, and subtle hints of earth, leather, and spice.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and tightly woven, with firm but polished tannins, vivid freshness, and impressive concentration. Dark fruit, mineral notes, and savory complexity unfold slowly, leading to a long, precise finish. While already complex, the 2001 vintage still has the structure to age gracefully for many more years under proper cellaring.
Production
Château Latour sits in the southern part of Pauillac on gravelly soils that drain exceptionally well, helping Cabernet Sauvignon ripen with intensity and finesse. The estate is known for meticulous vineyard work and selective harvesting, followed by careful parcel-by-parcel vinification to preserve precision, purity, and structure. The style reflects the terroir’s power and the château’s exacting approach to blending and élevage.
Food & Serving
Best enjoyed with richly flavored dishes such as roasted lamb, beef Wellington, venison, duck breast, or truffle-infused dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if opening now, especially if the wine is still showing youthful structure. A wider-bowled Bordeaux glass will help reveal its layered aromatics.
Producer
Château Latour is among the most celebrated estates in Bordeaux and was classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 classification. With a long history in Pauillac, it has earned a reputation for producing some of the most powerful, long-lived, and consistent wines in the Médoc. Its wines are widely regarded as reference points for the great Left Bank style.
