Description
Heymann-Löwenstein’s Kirchberg Riesling Großes Gewächs comes from one of the Terrassenmosel’s most dramatic and sun-exposed sites. Made from Riesling grown on extremely steep, south-facing terraces, it combines the mineral intensity of red, quartz-rich slate with the precision and freshness expected of a VDP.Große Lage. The term “Terrassenmosel” itself was coined by Reinhard Löwenstein, underlining the estate’s close connection to this distinctive landscape.
Tasting Notes
The wine is expected to show a bright, pale appearance, with the focused, finely structured character associated with Riesling from the Kirchberg vineyard. Its highly exposed location and heat-retaining slate may contribute ripe citrus and stone-fruit aromas, complemented by notes of crushed rock, herbs and subtle spice.
On the palate, expect a concentrated yet lively style, balancing ripe fruit with pronounced mineral tension and refreshing acidity. The wine’s depth, structure and Großes Gewächs classification suggest excellent ageing potential, with further complexity likely to develop in bottle over several years and potentially much longer in a good cellar.
Production
The Kirchberg vineyard lies near Hatzenport on the left bank of the Mosel, where slopes rise at an extraordinary 100–150% gradient in full southern exposure. Its hard, red, iron-oxide-rich slate and quartzite soils contribute to the site’s warmth and mineral character; it is regarded as one of the hottest locations along the Mosel. The steep terraces require careful, predominantly manual viticulture, while the Heymann-Löwenstein approach emphasises expressing the vineyard without oenological correction. The grapes are used for a VDP.Große Lage Riesling, with the site’s natural concentration and freshness forming the basis of the wine’s style.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C to allow the wine’s mineral depth and aromatic detail to unfold. It is a natural partner for freshwater fish, shellfish, roast poultry and dishes featuring cream or beurre blanc, while its acidity also works well with Asian-inspired cuisine, herbs and gently spicy flavours. Decanting is not essential for young bottles, but 30–60 minutes in a decanter can help reveal the wine’s structure and complexity; mature bottles are best handled gently and served soon after opening.
Producer
Weingut Heymann-Löwenstein is one of the leading names of the Terrassenmosel and is closely associated with the revival and recognition of its steep, stone-walled vineyards. Led by Reinhard Löwenstein, the estate has championed site expression, sustainable attention to the historic terraces and wines with a clear sense of origin. Its VDP membership and focus on distinguished vineyard sites such as Kirchberg reflect the importance of terroir within the estate’s Riesling portfolio.
