Description
Fleurie Clos Vernay 2023 from Lafarge-Vial is a beautifully poised Beaujolais that brings together the finesse of Fleurie with the thoughtful, hands-off winemaking the estate is known for. As one of the most charming crus of the region, Fleurie has long been celebrated for its fragrant, graceful style, and this bottling showcases that elegance with extra depth and precision.
Tasting Notes
Expect a bright, luminous ruby color in the glass. The nose is lifted and expressive, with red berries, fresh violets, and subtle spice, followed by hints of минераlity and fine earthiness. On the palate, it is silken and energetic, balancing juicy cherry and raspberry fruit with a refined, savory edge and a very pure finish.
The wine’s structure suggests excellent short- to mid-term aging potential, during which its floral character and mineral nuance should become even more pronounced. While already delicious in youth, a little cellar time will reward the patient drinker.
Production
Clos Vernay is a single-site Fleurie cuvée from Lafarge-Vial, a producer closely associated with careful vineyard work and restrained cellar intervention. The wine comes from the granite-based terroirs typical of Fleurie, where poor soils and elevation help preserve freshness and aromatic lift. Fruit is harvested by hand, and vinification is carried out with a light touch to preserve purity of fruit and site expression.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roast chicken, duck breast, charcuterie, mushroom dishes, and lighter game preparations. It also works well with grilled salmon or earthy vegetarian plates. Serve slightly chilled, around 14–16°C, and consider a short decant if opening it young to let the aromatics unfold.
Producer
Lafarge-Vial is a respected name in Burgundy and Beaujolais, founded by Frédéric and Chantal Lafarge after years of experience at Domaine Michel Lafarge in Volnay. The estate has earned a strong reputation for crafting expressive, terroir-driven wines with a natural, restrained style. In Beaujolais, Lafarge-Vial is particularly admired for showing how serious and age-worthy cru Beaujolais can be.
