Description
Domaine Thillardon’s Chénas Vibrations 2023 is a pure, energetic expression of Gamay from one of Beaujolais’ most exciting young domaines. Sourced from a blend of estate parcels across the Chénas cru, it brings together the appellation’s depth and structure with a lively, almost electric fruit profile. In 2023, the wine leans a touch brighter and more lifted than the 2022, making it especially seductive and immediately approachable.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Vibrations 2023 shows a luminous ruby hue with purple highlights, hinting at its youth and freshness. The nose is vivid and aromatic, led by red cherries, wild strawberries, and raspberries, layered with dried rose petals, a twist of pink peppercorn, and a subtle herbal lift from the whole-cluster fermentation—think thyme, stemmy spice, and a touch of forest floor.
On the palate, the wine is silky and sleek, with a beautiful, gliding texture that’s very much in line with Thillardon’s signature style. Juicy red fruit dominates—cranberry, redcurrant, and cherry—supported by gentle tannins and a fine-boned, mouthwatering acidity. Hints of savoury spice, crushed rock and a faint stemmy grip add complexity and a slightly wild edge that keeps each sip engaging. While crafted for early enjoyment and bursting with youthful vibrancy, it has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 3–6 years, gaining more earth, spice, and floral nuance.
Production
Vibrations is drawn from several organically farmed parcels across the Chénas cru, where old-vine Gamay grows on a mosaic of decomposed granite, sand, and rocky, mineral-rich soils at moderate altitudes. These sites give both the finesse and backbone that define the wine. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with rigorous sorting to preserve whole, healthy bunches. Vinification follows a low-intervention, Beaujolais-inspired approach: a high proportion of whole clusters undergo semi-carbonic or infusion-style fermentation using indigenous yeasts, with gentle extraction to emphasise perfume and finesse over power. Maturation usually takes place in a mix of neutral vessels—such as older barrels and/or concrete or large foudres—allowing the wine to clarify and knit together without overt oak influence, preserving its purity and vibrant fruit.
Food & Serving
This Chénas is a versatile, food-friendly red that shines with charcuterie, pâtés, and terrines, as well as roast chicken, herb-crusted pork, grilled sausages, and classic bistro dishes like coq au vin or duck confit. Its bright acidity and subtle herbal notes also make it a fine partner for mushroom dishes, ratatouille, lentil salads, and semi-soft cheeses such as Tomme, Reblochon, or young Comté. Serve slightly chilled at around 14–16°C to highlight its freshness and aromatic lift. A light decant of 20–30 minutes can help the wine open up, especially in its youth, revealing more spice and floral complexity without dulling its vibrant edge.
Producer
Domaine Thillardon is a rising star in Beaujolais, based in the lesser-known but increasingly acclaimed cru of Chénas. Run by brothers Paul-Henri and Charles Thillardon, the estate has become a reference point for thoughtful, terroir-driven Gamay, farmed with great respect for the land. Over the past decade, they have converted their vineyards to organic and often biodynamic practices, and embraced a more minimalist, Burgundian-influenced approach in the cellar, focusing on finesse and transparency. Their work has helped reposition Chénas—from a relatively overlooked cru—to one of the most exciting sources of elegant, ageworthy Beaujolais, with wines like Vibrations showcasing the full spectrum of the appellation’s character.
