Description

Domaine Thillardon Chénas Vibrations 2022 captures the soulful, slightly wild side of Beaujolais, channeling the full character of the Chénas cru into a single, expressive bottling. Crafted from a blend of fruit across the estate’s best parcels, it balances juicy Gamay charm with real structure and mineral depth. This cuvée has quickly become a reference point for modern, terroir-driven Chénas, highlighting why this lesser-known cru is gaining serious attention among enthusiasts.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Vibrations 2022 shows a deep, vivid ruby colour with purple highlights—bright and youthful, yet clearly concentrated. The nose is lifted and perfumed: dark cherry and black raspberry mingle with notes of violet, subtle licorice and a touch of sauvage, underpinned by hints of smoke, wet stone and a faint saline edge. On the palate, the wine is fresh and juicy at first sip, with crunchy dark berries and ripe cherry wrapped in a silky yet energetic texture. There’s a gentle but definite tannic frame that gives the wine seriousness and grip, while a fine-boned acidity drives it forward. The finish is long, mineral and slightly salty, echoing black raspberry, spice and floral tones. Enjoyable in its youth for its vibrancy and purity, it also has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 5–8 years, gaining complexity and polish.

Production
Vibrations is sourced from a patchwork of Chénas parcels, where Gamay vines grow on the granitic and sandy soils that define this small, high-quality cru in northern Beaujolais. These well-drained, mineral-rich slopes naturally limit yields and concentrate flavour, giving wines with both lift and depth. Domaine Thillardon works with organic and strongly low-intervention principles: manual harvesting ensures only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches are selected, often picked relatively early to preserve tension and aromatic brightness. In the cellar, whole-cluster or predominantly whole-bunch fermentation is favoured, using indigenous yeasts to express each site’s character. Gentle extraction, minimal manipulation and careful élevage—typically in neutral vessels such as concrete or old oak—allow the Gamay fruit, floral aromatics and stony minerality of Chénas to shine without heavy oak influence.

Food & Serving
This Chénas is a versatile food wine that thrives with dishes that match its vibrancy and subtle earthy tones. Try it with charcuterie, pâtés, and terrines, roast chicken with herbs, grilled pork, duck breast, or simple bistro fare like steak frites. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom dishes, roasted root vegetables, and semi-soft cheeses such as Tomme de Savoie or young Comté. Serve slightly chilled, around 14–16°C, to highlight its freshness and aromatic lift. A short decant of 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up and soften the youthful tannins, though it can also be enjoyed directly after opening for a more primary, energetic expression.

Producer
Domaine Thillardon is one of the standout new-generation domaines in Beaujolais, led by the Thillardon family in the village of Chénas. Over the past decade, they have become key figures in the renaissance of the northern crus, championing organic farming, low yields and a thoughtful, hands-off approach in the cellar. Their work has helped reposition Chénas—from a somewhat overlooked appellation—to a source of serious, terroir-driven Gamay sought after by sommeliers and collectors. With a focus on expressing individual sites and preserving the liveliness of the fruit, Domaine Thillardon has garnered critical acclaim and a loyal following among those looking for Beaujolais that combines authenticity, drinkability and depth.
