Description

Domaine A.F. Gros Moulin à Vent En Mortperay 2022 is a refined expression of cru Beaujolais, crafted from 100% Gamay in one of the appellation’s most revered terroirs. This is Beaujolais with a Burgundian soul: structured, ageworthy, and thoughtfully made, offering far more depth than the region’s simple bistro wines. The Mortperay lieu-dit brings both power and finesse, making this a standout choice for those who enjoy Pinot Noir–like elegance with Gamay’s vibrant charm.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 En Mortperay shows a deep, vivid ruby hue with purple reflections, signaling both concentration and youth. The nose is expressive and layered, opening with dark cherries, blackberries, and crushed raspberries, followed by hints of violets, peony, and a subtle spice note reminiscent of white pepper and clove. Underneath, you may find a gentle minerality and a touch of graphite that points clearly to Moulin-à-Vent’s granitic soils. On the palate, this wine is fuller-bodied for Gamay, with a firm yet polished tannic backbone that sets it apart from lighter Beaujolais. Juicy black cherry, ripe red currant, and mulberry take the lead, supported by notes of dried herbs, forest floor, and a faint savory edge. The acidity is bright but well integrated, giving the wine a lively, mouthwatering finish. While already approachable in its youth, the structure and concentration suggest very good aging potential—expect it to evolve gracefully over 5–8 years, gaining more earthy complexity and silky texture with time.

Production
Moulin-à-Vent is often called the “King of Beaujolais,” and the En Mortperay site sits on classic, poor, granitic soils that naturally limit yields and intensify flavor. Domaine A.F. Gros, with deep Burgundian roots, brings a meticulous, Côte d’Or–inspired approach to Beaujolais: careful vineyard work, hand harvesting at optimal ripeness, and strict selection of bunches. The grapes are typically vinified using a mix of traditional Beaujolais methods and Burgundian techniques—often including partial destemming to balance fruit purity with structure. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vessels to preserve aromatics, followed by aging in a combination of tank and carefully chosen oak, which adds subtle complexity without overwhelming the Gamay’s natural brightness.

Food & Serving
This Moulin-à-Vent is a versatile partner at the table and shines with flavor-forward, savory dishes. Try it with roast chicken, duck breast, grilled lamb chops, charcuterie, terrines, and earthy mushroom dishes, or pair it with semi-soft and aged cheeses like Comté and Tomme. For the best expression, serve at 14–16°C; slightly cooler than a typical red Burgundy to highlight freshness while allowing the aromatics to open. Decanting for 30–45 minutes is recommended, especially in its youth, to soften the tannins and bring out the floral and spice notes.

Producer
Domaine A.F. Gros is a respected Burgundian estate with roots in some of the most storied terroirs of the Côte d’Or, and over time has become known for applying that same precision and craftsmanship to select crus in Beaujolais. The Gros family has been associated with fine Pinot Noir for generations, and their decision to work in Moulin-à-Vent reflects both the rising status of Beaujolais and the kinship between top Gamay and Burgundy. By combining traditional Burgundian know-how with the distinct character of Beaujolais crus, Domaine A.F. Gros has contributed to the reappraisal of Moulin-à-Vent as a serious, ageworthy wine, earning critical attention for wines that are both expressive and impeccably balanced.
