Description
Corte delle Signorie Brunello di Montalcino Conte Palatino 2017 is a classic expression of Sangiovese from one of Italy’s most revered wine regions. Crafted in the hills of southern Tuscany, this Brunello balances depth, structure, and elegance, offering a refined experience for both collectors and enthusiasts. The 2017 vintage showcases the estate’s ability to capture Montalcino’s warm, sun-drenched character while preserving freshness and nuance.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Brunello di Montalcino shows a deep garnet core with brick-tinged edges, a sign of its maturation and traditional long aging. The nose opens with lifted aromas of sour cherry and dried red berries, followed by notes of dried roses, leather, cedar, and a touch of sweet spice—think clove, tobacco leaf, and a hint of balsamic.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with finely etched tannins and a vibrant line of acidity that is characteristic of top Sangiovese from Montalcino. Flavors of cherry, red plum, and blood orange are layered with savory undertones of herbs, earth, and a subtle smokiness from barrel aging. The finish is long and persistent, with lingering notes of spice and dried flowers. While already approachable with some air, the 2017 still has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 8–12 years, gaining complexity and softer texture with time in the cellar.
Production
Sourced from hillside vineyards in Montalcino, the Sangiovese grapes benefit from a mix of clay and limestone soils that offer both structure and elegance, as well as the cooling influence of altitude and breezes from the surrounding countryside. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure optimal selection of bunches, with careful sorting in the cellar. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks to preserve aromatic purity, followed by an extended maceration to extract color, tannin, and complexity. The wine is then aged for several years in large oak casks and/or barrels, in line with Brunello di Montalcino regulations, allowing the tannins to integrate and the wine’s tertiary notes—leather, spice, dried fruit—to develop before bottling and further bottle aging.
Food & Serving
This Brunello di Montalcino is a natural partner for rich, savory Tuscan-inspired dishes. Pair it with bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised lamb shanks, game meats, or hearty stews featuring mushrooms and root vegetables. It also complements aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or pecorino toscano. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the aromatics to unfold and the tannins to soften.
