Description
Château de Corcelles Brouilly Les Roches 2021 is an elegant Beaujolais red made from Gamay, combining ripe berry character with a distinctly mineral edge. Produced at a château whose origins reach back to the Carolingian period, it offers a refined expression of Brouilly with soft tannins, polished fruit and an impressively long finish.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows an intense red colour with attractive purple reflections. Its nose is expressive and inviting, filled with aromas of ripe red and dark berries. On the palate, juicy fruit is complemented by a refreshing mineral character, while supple tannins give the wine a graceful, silky structure. The finish is notably persistent and balanced. It is approachable now, but should develop additional savoury and earthy complexity over the next three to five years when properly stored.
Production
The grapes come from Château de Corcelles’ Brouilly Les Roches vineyard, in the granite-rich Beaujolais landscape traditionally associated with the appellation. The estate’s vines include a significant proportion of old plantings, averaging around 40 years of age, which contribute concentration and depth. The grapes are harvested at a high level of ripeness and fermented at low temperatures to preserve the wine’s fresh, expressive fruit and mineral precision.
Food & Serving
A versatile partner for charcuterie, pâté, soft and mature cheeses, poultry and other light meats. Its bright fruit and gentle tannins also make it a natural match for poached eggs and savoury egg dishes. Serve lightly chilled at around 14–16°C. Decanting is not essential, although a brief 20–30 minutes in a carafe can help open the wine if enjoyed soon after opening.
Producer
Château de Corcelles was rebuilt by Antoine de Laye on the foundations of a much older Carolingian-era building. Its location near the Douby River once marked the boundary between the bishoprics of Autun and Lyon and between Burgundy and Beaujolais. The estate was associated with the Ragny de La Magdeleine family, later passed to the Tircuy de La Barre family, and gradually became known as Corcelles. Listed as a national heritage site since 1927, the château was extensively restored in the 1960s, with particular care given to its distinctive roofs. Further investment by the Richard family has returned the property to its former splendour, while its vineyard continues to produce characterful Beaujolais wines from mature vines.
