Description
Château de Beaucastel’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin is one of the Rhône Valley’s most prestigious and limited cuvées, created in honour of the Perrin family member who championed Mourvèdre at the estate. The 2013 vintage combines the estate’s oldest vines with remarkable concentration, structure and finesse, making it a compelling choice for collectors of age-worthy southern Rhône wines.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-red in colour with developing garnet hues, this powerful Châteauneuf-du-Pape opens with an expressive bouquet of dark berries, black cherry, violet and garrigue, followed by notes of leather, spice and earthy complexity. On the palate, it is full-bodied and richly textured, balancing ripe blackberry and plum flavours with savoury herbs, pepper, liquorice and finely integrated oak. Firm but polished tannins provide excellent structure, while fresh acidity keeps the wine energetic and precise. The 2013 is already rewarding with decanting, but has the depth and balance to develop further over the next 15–20 years under suitable cellar conditions.
Production
The wine is sourced from Beaucastel’s old vines in the stony, limestone- and clay-rich terroirs of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where the region’s galets roulés help retain heat and contribute to even ripening. Mourvèdre forms the backbone of the blend, supported by Grenache, Syrah and Counoise. The grapes are carefully selected and traditionally vinified at the estate before maturation in large oak vessels, allowing the wine to gain complexity while preserving the character of the fruit and its southern Rhône origins.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decant for one to two hours when enjoying the wine now, particularly to soften its youthful structure and reveal its aromatic depth. Its intensity and savoury character make it an excellent partner for slow-roasted lamb, beef in red-wine sauce, game, braised short ribs and richly seasoned Mediterranean dishes. It can also be enjoyed with mature hard cheeses.
Producer
Founded in 1549, Château de Beaucastel is one of the historic estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and remains a leading name in the southern Rhône. The Perrin family has played a central role in shaping the estate’s identity, with a particular focus on organic farming, old vines and the preservation of the appellation’s traditional grape varieties. Hommage à Jacques Perrin is among Beaucastel’s most sought-after bottlings, produced only in selected vintages and recognised for its longevity, elegance and exceptional expression of Mourvèdre.
