Description

Château de Beaucastel’s 2019 Châteauneuf-du-Pape in magnum (1.5 L) is a majestic expression of the Southern Rhône, combining depth, power and classical elegance. This vintage is already seductive in its youth, yet built with the structure and concentration to age gracefully for decades—especially in large format. Long associated with some of the greatest wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Beaucastel’s 2019 evokes comparisons to legendary years like 2007 and 2009, with dark fruit intensity and a signature savory complexity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape shows an opaque, deep ruby to garnet hue, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is generous and layered: dark plum, black cherry and blackberry compote interwoven with notes of cola, licorice, garrigue (wild thyme, rosemary and lavender), cracked pepper and a subtle smoky, gamey nuance typical of Beaucastel’s high Mourvèdre content. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, dense and tightly knit, with ripe dark fruit at its core—plums, blackcurrants and macerated cherries—supported by savory spice, cocoa nibs and a distinct thread of anise and licorice that lingers on the long, dusty finish. Tannins are ample but fine-grained and ripe, providing both grip and elegance, while fresh acidity keeps the richness in balance. In magnum, this 2019 has excellent aging potential: enjoyable young with air, it is expected to shut down slightly after a few years in bottle, then re-emerge with even greater complexity over 10–25+ years, developing truffle, leather and dried herb nuances over time.

Production
Château de Beaucastel is situated on the northern edge of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, on classic terraces of large rolled pebbles (galets roulés) over clay and sand, which store daytime heat and release it slowly at night, promoting optimal ripening. The estate is renowned for cultivating all 13 permitted grape varieties of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with a particularly high proportion of Mourvèdre contributing structure, spice and age-worthiness. Farmed organically and biodynamically for decades, the vineyards are harvested by hand, with strict selection of bunches in the vineyard and at the winery. Vinification is traditionally separate for each variety: the grapes are often fermented with a high proportion of whole clusters, and aging takes place predominantly in large old oak foudres and vats, preserving fruit purity and terroir expression while allowing the wine to knit together slowly before blending and bottling.

Food & Serving
The 2019 Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a natural match for robust, flavor-packed dishes: think slow-braised lamb shank with rosemary, duck confit, beef daube Provençale, game birds, or grilled ribeye with herb butter. It also pairs beautifully with earthy dishes like mushroom ragouts, truffle risotto, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté, Mimolette or Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity without emphasizing the alcohol. In magnum, decanting is strongly recommended for young bottles—give it 1–3 hours before serving to allow the bouquet to open and the tannins to soften. As the wine evolves with age, a shorter decant of around 30–60 minutes will generally suffice, mainly to remove any sediment.

Producer
Château de Beaucastel is one of the historic and most revered estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with roots tracing back to the 16th–17th century and owned by the Perrin family since the early 1900s. The domaine has been a pioneer of organic and later biodynamic viticulture in the region, long before it became fashionable, and is celebrated for its commitment to all 13 traditional Châteauneuf varieties—particularly Mourvèdre, which gives Beaucastel its unmistakable structure and savory depth. Over the decades, Beaucastel has regularly earned top scores and global acclaim, contributing significantly to the prestige of Châteauneuf-du-Pape on the world stage and setting a benchmark for age-worthy, terroir-driven Rhône reds.
