Description
Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2019 in double magnum (3 L) is a benchmark southern Rhône red, presented in a format ideal for the cellar or for a special table. Known for its depth, structure, and age‑worthiness, this vintage shows the hallmark Beaucastel balance between power and finesse. In 2019, the estate has crafted a wine that recalls legendary years like 2007 and 2009, with dark fruit richness wrapped in refined tannins and savory complexity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape is deep ruby to garnet with an almost opaque core, hinting at its concentration and youth. The nose opens with dark fruits—blackberry, black cherry, and ripe plum—layered with notes of cola, licorice, dried herbs (garrigue), and a touch of smoked meat and crushed stone, all framed by subtle spice.
On the palate, this is rich, full-bodied, and generously structured, with dense black and blue fruits supported by firm but polished tannins. Flavors of black plum, blackcurrant, and morello cherry are interwoven with savory hints of tapenade, licorice, and warm spices, leading into a long, dry, slightly dusty finish that echoes with dark fruit and anise. The 3 L format significantly enhances its aging potential; while already approachable with ample air in its youth, this wine is built for the long term and should evolve beautifully over 15–25 years, gaining more truffle, leather, and gamey nuances with time.
Production
Beaucastel’s vineyards lie on the classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroir of rolled galets roulés (large river stones) over clay and sand, which store heat by day and release it at night, helping to ripen grapes fully while maintaining freshness. The estate is certified organic and farmed biodynamically, with meticulous hand-harvesting to allow strict selection of perfectly ripe, healthy fruit. Unusually for the appellation, Beaucastel uses all thirteen permitted grape varieties, with Mourvèdre and Grenache playing leading roles, complemented by Syrah, Counoise and the remaining indigenous grapes. After careful sorting, the varieties are traditionally vinified, often in separate lots, with temperature-controlled fermentation and a judicious use of large oak foudres and barrels to preserve purity of fruit while building texture. The result is a wine that captures both the sun-drenched richness and the underlying freshness of its exceptional site.
Food & Serving
This 2019 Beaucastel in double magnum is a superb centerpiece for hearty, flavorful dishes: think slow-braised lamb shank, roast leg of lamb with rosemary, duck confit, cassoulet, or aged hard cheeses like Comté or Pecorino. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, venison, and richly flavored Mediterranean stews studded with olives and herbs. Serve at 16–18 °C (60–64 °F). In its youth, especially in this large format, it benefits greatly from a long decant—2 to 3 hours or more—to allow the aromatics and texture to unwind; as it gains bottle age, 1–2 hours of decanting will usually be sufficient to reveal its full complexity.
Producer
Château de Beaucastel is one of the most revered estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and a reference point for Rhône lovers worldwide. Owned and run by the Perrin family for generations, the domaine has been a pioneer of organic and biodynamic viticulture in the region, long before such practices became fashionable. Beaucastel is renowned for its commitment to using all thirteen permitted grape varieties, and for the unusually high proportion of Mourvèdre in its blends, which contributes structure, spice, and remarkable longevity. Consistently lauded by critics and collectors alike, Beaucastel has produced some of the most age‑worthy and distinctive wines in the appellation, firmly cementing its status as a flagship estate of the southern Rhône.
