Pouilly-Fumé is Sauvignon Blanc from the right bank of the Loire, facing Sancerre across the river. The wine is fuller and rounder than most people expect from Loire Sauvignon, with ripe citrus, white peach and that flinty, struck-match note the best sites give. Here you can buy Pouilly-Fumé wine from specialist merchants across Europe, including the cult cuvées of Didier Dagueneau.
What makes Pouilly-Fumé wine different from other Sauvignon Blanc
The appellation is small and tightly defined: seven communes around the town of Pouilly-sur-Loire in the Nièvre, with Saint-Andelain and Tracy-sur-Loire among the best known. It has been an AOC since 1937, and only Sauvignon Blanc is allowed. The name comes from the grey bloom that coats ripe Sauvignon grapes here, the colour of smoke, and many drinkers also hear it in the gunflint aroma of the wines.
Three soils do the talking. Kimmeridgian marl, the terres blanches, gives weight and a chalky grip. Hard limestone, the caillottes, gives lift and a lighter, more aromatic wine. Flint clay, silex, found mostly around Saint-Andelain, gives the tense, smoky, long-lived bottles the region is famous for.
Pouilly-Fumé vs Sancerre
The two sit about ten miles apart on opposite banks, and both are Sauvignon Blanc. Sancerre tends to be leaner and greener in its youth, with more limestone in the ground. Pouilly-Fumé usually carries a little more body, more stone fruit and more of that smoky edge from the flint. Sancerre is ready sooner; Pouilly-Fumé rewards a few years in the cellar. If you like one, our Sancerre wines are the obvious next shelf to explore.
The Pouilly-Fumé producers worth knowing and their signature cuvées
Didier Dagueneau is the name that changed the appellation. From the 1980s the domaine pushed single-parcel wines, low yields and barrel work, and labels its wines Blanc Fumé de Pouilly, the old alternative name. Silex comes from flint soils and is one of the most sought-after white wines in France. Pur Sang ("pureblood") is a wink at journalists who kept writing about the horse used to plough some of the vines.
de Ladoucette at Château du Nozet is the other landmark, the largest estate in the appellation, with the family's vineyards going back to 1787. Its prestige cuvée Baron de L is made only in strong vintages and is a benchmark for how gracefully Pouilly-Fumé can age.
For organic Pouilly-Fumé, Jonathan Didier Pabiot makes a range of cuvées, including Aubaine, Léon, Eurythmie and Luminance, that show the soils side by side. Claude Michot, Domaine de Bel Air (Cuvée Riquette, Les Pierres Blanches), Bailly-Reverdy, Domaine Bouchié-Chatellier with La Renardière and Domaine Laporte round things out, alongside Jean-Max Roger's Les Alouettes. Most bottles sit in the twenty-five to fifty euro range, with Baron de L and the Dagueneau wines well above.
How to serve and pair Pouilly-Fumé white wine
Serve it cool rather than ice cold, around 10 to 12°C, so the texture shows. Young Pouilly-Fumé is superb with goat's cheese (the local Crottin de Chavignol is the classic match), oysters, grilled white fish and asparagus. Richer, older bottles can take scallops in butter or roast chicken. Pouilly-Fumé questions we hear most often
What grape is Pouilly-Fumé?
Always 100% Sauvignon Blanc. The appellation rules allow no other grape.
Is Pouilly-Fumé the same as Pouilly-Fuissé?
No, and it is the most common mix-up in French wine. Pouilly-Fuissé is Chardonnay from the Mâconnais in southern Burgundy, a completely different region and style. Pouilly-sur-Loire, meanwhile, is a separate local appellation for Chasselas.
What does "Blanc Fumé de Pouilly" mean?
It is an official alternative name for Pouilly-Fumé, and Dagueneau uses it on his labels. The wine inside is the same appellation.
How long does Pouilly-Fumé keep?
Most bottles drink beautifully within three to five years of the vintage. Wines from flint soils and top cuvées such as Silex or Baron de L can improve for a decade or more.
