Lower Austria, or Niederösterreich, is the country's largest quality-wine region and the source of most of Austria's finest whites. It wraps around Vienna and follows the Danube and its side valleys, where steep terraced vineyards and cool nights give wines of real precision and drive. This is Grüner Veltliner and Riesling country: dry, mineral and built for the table.

The Danube valleys: Wachau, Kremstal and Kamptal

The finest sites sit along the Danube in the Wachau, Kremstal and Kamptal, where gneiss and primary rock give Grüner Veltliner its white pepper, citrus and savoury lentil note, alongside racy Riesling full of stone fruit and lime. In the Wachau, look for the ripeness scale on the label: Steinfeder for the lightest wines, Federspiel for balanced everyday drinking, and Smaragd for the fullest, most age-worthy bottlings. These rank among the world's great dry white wines, and the best reward a few years in the cellar.

Weinviertel Grüner Veltliner and food pairing

Further east, the Weinviertel makes lighter, peppery Grüner Veltliner, Austria's first DAC and a brilliant everyday pour. There are reds too, chiefly juicy Zweigelt and firmer Blaufränkisch. At the table, Grüner Veltliner is one of the most flexible whites there is: it takes Wiener schnitzel, roast chicken and pork in its stride, and even manages asparagus and artichoke that defeat most wines. Riesling loves seafood, sushi and anything with a little heat. Or explore the rest of Austria.
