Description
Zitta Wines Union Street GSM 2021 is a richly fruited yet classically balanced red blend from the heart of Australia’s Barossa Valley. Crafted from Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah/Shiraz, it brings a distinctly Old World sensibility to one of the New World’s most iconic regions. Named for the quiet street where Zitta’s cellar sits, this cuvée captures both Barossa’s generosity and the restraint of traditional European winemaking.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Union Street GSM 2021 shows a deep ruby core with bright crimson hues at the rim. The nose opens with ripe red and black berries—think raspberry, plum and blackberry—layered with hints of violet, dried herbs, licorice and subtle spice from careful oak aging. Underneath, you’ll find more savoury notes of pepper, cured meat and a touch of earth that speak clearly of Barossa’s old vines.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with plush, mouth-filling fruit framed by fine, velvety tannins. Grenache lends juicy red fruit and lift, Mourvèdre contributes structure and a savoury, almost gamey complexity, while Syrah/Shiraz brings dark fruit, pepper and depth. Fresh acidity keeps everything in balance, making the wine lively rather than heavy, and the finish is long with lingering notes of spice, dark cherry and cocoa. Enjoyable now for its youthful vibrancy, it has the concentration and structure to evolve gracefully in bottle for 6–10 years under proper cellaring conditions.
Production
Union Street GSM 2021 is sourced from selected Barossa Valley vineyards, where warm, sunny days and cool nights help the Rhône varietals achieve full ripeness while retaining freshness. The region’s mix of ancient sandy, loam and clay soils encourages low yields and naturally concentrated fruit. Grapes are harvested primarily by hand at optimal ripeness, parcel by parcel, to preserve aroma and flavour integrity. In the cellar, each variety is typically fermented separately in small batches, using gentle extraction to capture colour and fine tannins without harshness. After fermentation, the components are matured in a combination of older and selected small oak barrels to add texture and complexity without overwhelming the fruit, before blending and a period of bottle rest to harmonise the final wine.
Food & Serving
This Barossa GSM is a natural partner for flavourful, rustic dishes. Try it with grilled lamb chops, slow-braised beef or lamb shank, Italian sausages, herb-roasted chicken, or Mediterranean-inspired dishes featuring tomatoes, olives and rosemary. It also works beautifully with aged hard cheeses and charcuterie. Serve at 16–18°C; a brief decant of 30–45 minutes helps the wine open up its aromatic layers, especially in its youth, revealing more of the savoury spice and floral notes.
Producer
Zitta Wines was founded when Angelo De Fazio, whose roots lie in a Southern Italian winegrowing family, purchased the Barossa property in 2004. He named the estate “Zitta”—Italian for “peace and quiet”—to reflect both the tranquillity of the site and his thoughtful, hands-on approach in the vineyard and cellar. From one of Australia’s most important and historic wine regions, Angelo set out to craft wines in the spirit of the Old World, favouring balance, structure and a sense of place over sheer power. Focusing on Rhône red varieties and, almost by Barossa tradition, Chardonnay, Zitta has become known for producing expressive, small-batch wines that marry Barossa’s richness with European-style elegance and restraint.
