Description

Yves Cuilleron’s Saint-Joseph Les Serines 2022 is a compelling northern Rhône Syrah, combining the power of old vines with the finesse and mineral precision of steep granite slopes. Aged for 18 months in French oak, it offers remarkable depth while preserving the freshness and elegance that define great Saint-Joseph. This is a distinctive expression of one of the Rhône’s historic Syrah appellations, equally suited to drinking now or cellaring.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in colour with rich purple highlights, the wine opens with an intense, layered bouquet of ripe blackberries, black cherries and plums. Floral notes of violet mingle with black pepper, liquorice and Mediterranean herbs, while nuances of graphite, toasted spice and finely integrated oak add further complexity. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, yet remarkably poised. Ripe dark fruit is supported by lively acidity, silky tannins and a pronounced granitic minerality. Subtle smoky and savoury notes emerge through the long, refined finish, alongside persistent flavours of black fruit, pepper and spice. Already generous and expressive, the 2022 has the structure to develop greater aromatic complexity over the next several years.

Production
The wine comes from old Syrah vines planted on the steep, granite-rich slopes of Saint-Joseph in the northern Rhône. These challenging sites contribute both concentration and the distinctive mineral character associated with the appellation. Following harvest, the grapes are vinified to preserve the purity of the fruit and structure of the terroir, before being matured for 18 months in French oak. The oak adds depth and subtle roasted-spice notes without overshadowing the wine’s freshness or varietal character.

Food & Serving
A natural partner for grilled or roasted beef, rack of lamb, duck breast and richly flavoured game dishes, this Saint-Joseph also works beautifully with mushroom-based casseroles and mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C. Decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended when enjoying the wine young, while older bottles should be poured carefully off any sediment.

Producer
Founded by Yves Cuilleron in the late 1980s, Domaine Yves Cuilleron has become one of the best-known independent estates in the northern Rhône. Based in Chavanay, the domaine works across the region’s most important appellations, with a particular focus on expressing the character of individual sites through Syrah and other Rhône varieties. Cuilleron is widely respected for combining meticulous vineyard work with precise, terroir-driven winemaking, helping to strengthen the reputation of Saint-Joseph and the wider northern Rhône.
