Description
The Weingut Ziereisen Chardonnay HA 22 2022 is a striking, Burgundian‑style Chardonnay from Baden that delivers both power and poise. Crafted by one of Germany’s most exciting artisan estates, it combines crystalline minerality with ripe, yellow-fruited charm and floral lift. This cuvée has quickly become a reference point for how serious, ageworthy Chardonnay from southern Germany can be.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Chardonnay HA 22 2022 shows a luminous straw-yellow color with subtle golden highlights, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose opens with aromas reminiscent of fine white Burgundy: delicate white flowers, lemon zest, ripe pear, yellow apple and a touch of stone fruit, all underpinned by a distinct stony, almost saline minerality.
On the palate, it is full-bodied yet wonderfully precise, with a firm, chalky backbone that carries layers of yellow fruit, citrus and a gentle nuttiness. The texture is dense but never heavy, with a vibrant acidity that keeps everything in balance and draws out a long, salty, mineral finish. The wine is already impressive in its youth, but the structure and intensity suggest an aging potential of at least 15 years, during which it will gain even more complexity, creaminess and tertiary notes of honey, hazelnut and brioche.
Production
Hailing from Baden in southern Germany, the Chardonnay vines for the HA 22 grow on limestone-rich soils that give the wine its trademark tension and salty mineral character—hence the frequent comparison to Burgundy. Ziereisen is known for low yields, meticulous work in the vineyards and a strong commitment to hand harvesting in order to bring only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes to the cellar. In the winery, the fruit is handled gently, often with spontaneous (wild yeast) fermentation, and raised in carefully chosen barrels or large wooden casks to add texture and complexity without overwhelming the natural expression of the terroir. Extended time on the lees further enhances the wine’s depth, creaminess and longevity.
Food & Serving
This Chardonnay is a versatile partner for refined cuisine, pairing beautifully with roasted or grilled poultry, veal, creamy poultry fricassee, or richer fish dishes such as turbot, halibut or salmon. It also shines alongside seafood in butter or cream sauces, shellfish, risotto, and subtly truffled pasta, as well as mild to medium-hard cheeses. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight its freshness, allowing the wine to warm slightly in the glass to reveal more aromatic depth. For maximum enjoyment, especially in its youth, decant for 30–60 minutes to let the wine open and fully express its mineral and floral nuances.
Producer
Weingut Ziereisen is a family-run estate based in Efringen-Kirchen in Baden, close to the borders with France and Switzerland—a crossroads that has helped shape its distinctive, terroir-driven style. Over the past decades, the Ziereisen family has built a reputation as one of Germany’s leading avant-garde producers, particularly known for their Pinot varieties and increasingly for their characterful Chardonnays that draw frequent comparisons to top Burgundian wines. Working with low-intervention methods in both vineyard and cellar, they focus on expressing the individuality of each site, resulting in wines that are highly regarded by sommeliers, critics and enthusiasts for their authenticity, depth and remarkable aging potential.
