Description
Weingut Wittmann’s Riesling Gundersheimer *Aus Ersten Lagen* 2023 is a precise, mineral-driven white from one of Rheinhessen’s most prized hillside sites. Sourced from vineyards neighboring the legendary Morstein, it captures the cool finesse and limestone tension that have made Wittmann a benchmark for dry German Riesling. This cuvée represents one of the estate’s select “Aus Ersten Lagen” bottlings, showcasing the expressive potential of top single-vineyard origins in the southern Rheinhessen hills.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Gundersheimer Riesling shows a bright, pale lemon color with green reflections, signaling freshness and youth. The nose opens with pure stone-fruit aromas—ripe peach and apricot—supported by citrus tones reminiscent of tangerine or clementine. With air, a cooler, more restrained side emerges: subtle smokiness, flinty minerality and delicate herbal nuances lend depth and sophistication.
On the palate, the wine is dry, precise and tightly woven, with a lively, finely etched acidity that frames the fruit. The flavor profile moves from classic peach and apricot into more exotic shades—hints of mango, pineapple and citrus zest—layered over a gently creamy texture. Underneath, a pronounced limestone-driven minerality runs from start to finish, giving the wine length and a saline, mouthwatering finish. While already accessible in its youth, this Riesling has the structure and acidity to develop further complexity over the next 5–10 years, gaining additional spice, honeyed notes and deeper savory tones with careful cellaring.
Production
The grapes for this wine come from the Gundersheimer Höllenbrand, directly adjacent to the famed Westhofener Morstein in southern Rheinhessen. Here, clay-marl topsoils rest over a massive subsoil of limestone, a combination that gives the wines both power and a striking, stony minerality. Weingut Wittmann farms these vineyards organically and biodynamically, with low yields and meticulous selection to ensure healthy, perfectly ripe Riesling berries. Harvest is carried out by hand, parcel by parcel, to capture optimal ripeness and preserve natural acidity. In the cellar, gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts and extended lees aging—often in a mix of stainless steel and large traditional wooden casks—allow the terroir to speak clearly, without excessive intervention or overt oak influence.
Food & Serving
This Riesling is a versatile partner at the table, particularly well suited to refined dishes that echo its freshness and minerality. It pairs beautifully with seafood such as grilled sea bass, scallops, sushi and sashimi, as well as dishes with a gentle aromatic lift—think Thai or Vietnamese cuisine with lime, ginger and fresh herbs. Classic matches include white asparagus with hollandaise, roast chicken with herbs, veal schnitzel, or goat’s and mild cow’s milk cheeses. Serve well chilled but not ice-cold, ideally around 9–11 °C (48–52 °F), to let the aromatics unfold. A brief splash in a carafe or 15–30 minutes of air in the glass helps the wine open up, especially in its first few years after release.
Producer
Weingut Wittmann, based in Westhofen in Rheinhessen, is one of Germany’s leading estates for dry, terroir-driven Riesling. The family has been tending vines in the region for centuries, but under the guidance of Philipp Wittmann, the winery has become a pioneer of organic and biodynamic viticulture and a reference point for precision, elegance and mineral expression. Wittmann’s top sites—Morstein, Kirchspiel, Brunnenhäuschen and Gundersheimer Höllenbrand—are among the most esteemed in Rheinhessen, and the estate’s wines regularly receive high acclaim from international critics and wine guides. Their “Aus Ersten Lagen” bottlings, such as this Gundersheimer Riesling, highlight the character of exceptional single vineyards and underscore Wittmann’s status as a standard-bearer for modern, world-class German Riesling.
