Description
Weingut Schloss Schönberg Spätburgunder Fürstenlager 2022 is a refined, cool-climate German Pinot Noir from the small but promising region of Hessische Bergstraße. Sourced from the renowned Fürstenlager vineyard, it combines purity of fruit with a fine, mineral backbone that reflects its hillside origin. This wine offers a modern, elegant interpretation of Spätburgunder, showing how this historic region is steadily gaining recognition among Pinot Noir lovers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Fürstenlager Spätburgunder shows a translucent ruby to light garnet hue, typical of finely made, cool-climate Pinot Noir. The nose is expressive yet delicate, with aromas of wild strawberries, red cherries and cranberries layered with hints of rose petals, dried herbs and a gentle touch of spice.
On the palate, the wine is precise and medium-bodied, with vibrant red fruit, subtle woodland notes and a saline, stony edge that speaks to its hillside terroir. Fine-grained tannins and fresh, well-integrated acidity give it structure without weight, leading to a long, graceful finish with lingering red berry and spice nuances. Enjoyable in its youth for its purity and brightness, it should continue to develop additional complexity over the next 5–7 years under good cellaring conditions.
Production
The Fürstenlager site in Hessische Bergstraße is known for its steep, well-exposed slopes and mineral-rich soils, which help produce Spätburgunder with both finesse and character. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection of only the healthiest, optimally ripe bunches, preserving the delicacy of this thin-skinned variety. In the cellar, vinification focuses on a gentle extraction to highlight fragrance and freshness rather than power, with fermentation and élevage designed to respect the grape and terroir—often using a measured touch of oak to frame, rather than dominate, the wine’s naturally elegant profile.
Food & Serving
This Spätburgunder is a versatile partner at the table and shines alongside dishes that echo its finesse rather than overpower it. Think roast chicken with herbs, duck breast with cherry or berry sauces, pork tenderloin, veal, mushroom risotto, or grilled salmon and tuna. It also pairs beautifully with soft to semi-hard cheeses such as Brie, Camembert or mild alpine styles. Serve lightly chilled at around 14–16°C. A short decant of 20–30 minutes can help the aromas open up, especially in its first few years.
Producer
Weingut Schloss Schönberg is based in the Hessische Bergstraße, one of Germany’s smaller and lesser-known wine regions, yet one with a long viticultural history along the slopes of the Odenwald hills. Working with vineyards around the historic Schloss Schönberg estate, the winery focuses on expressing the character of its local sites through varieties such as Riesling and Spätburgunder. By combining careful vineyard work with thoughtful, quality-driven winemaking, Weingut Schloss Schönberg has become part of a new wave of producers helping to raise the profile of Hessische Bergstraße on the German wine map.
