Description
Weingut Rings Riesling KREID Bio 2023 is a precision-crafted organic Riesling from the limestone-rich soils of Germany’s Pfalz region. True to the Rings style, it combines crystalline freshness with impressive depth, offering a wine that feels both vibrant and finely sculpted. The “KREID” name (German for “chalk”) highlights its unique origin on limestone parcels, giving this cuvée its distinctive mineral backbone and tension.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Riesling shows a pale lemon color with green reflections, signaling its youth and crisp profile. The nose is finely etched and detailed, with aromas of lime zest, green apple, white peach and grapefruit layered over notes of wet stone, chalk dust and a hint of fresh herbs.
On the palate, KREID is taut and focused, balancing juicy citrus and orchard fruit with a firm, salty minerality that runs through the finish. The wine is dry, linear and precise, with lively acidity and a mouthwatering, almost chalky texture that reflects its limestone terroir. Its structure and freshness suggest it will drink beautifully now for its energy and purity, but it also has the potential to evolve gracefully over the next 3–6 years, gaining a bit more silkiness and complexity with bottle age.
Production
Sourced from organically farmed vineyards on limestone and calcareous soils in the northern Pfalz, Riesling KREID is designed to express the cool, stony side of the region. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve acidity and aromatic intensity, then gently pressed. Fermentation typically takes place with carefully selected or native yeasts in stainless steel (and in part, larger neutral vessels), at controlled temperatures to safeguard freshness and purity of fruit. The wine is left on its fine lees for a period to enhance texture and complexity before bottling, with minimal intervention in line with Rings’ organic and quality-focused philosophy.
Food & Serving
This Riesling is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with sushi and sashimi, ceviche, oysters, and lightly grilled fish. It also shines alongside fresh goat cheese, soft cheeses with a bloomy rind, salads with citrus dressings, and delicately spiced Asian dishes such as Vietnamese summer rolls or Thai salads. Serve well-chilled, around 8–10°C, to highlight its precision and mineral drive. Decanting is not essential, but a brief time in the glass will allow the aromas to unfold and the texture to soften slightly.
Producer
Weingut Rings is a rising star of the Pfalz, a family-run estate that has rapidly gained a reputation for meticulous viticulture and terroir-driven wines, particularly Riesling and Pinot varieties. Located in Freinsheim in northern Pfalz, the estate has embraced organic farming and low-intervention cellar work to capture the character of its diverse soils—especially limestone and sandstone. Over the last decade, Rings has become one of the most talked-about producers in the region, earning acclaim from leading wine critics and securing a place among Germany’s quality-focused, modern wineries. The KREID cuvée is part of their push to highlight specific soil types, demonstrating how Riesling can transparently transmit the nuances of Pfalz’s limestone-rich sites.
