Weingut Proidl, Riesling Katzengold, 2021

Weingut Proidl’s Riesling Katzengold 2021 is a distinctive Kremstal white that brings together ripe fruit, striking minerality and a more textured, generous style of Riesling. Named after the pyrite-rich "fool’s gold" found in the schist soils of Pfeningberg, it reflects both the vineyard’s character and the estate’s long-standing focus on precise, site-driven wines.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Katzengold shows a golden hue that hints at its richness and concentration. The nose is layered and expressive, with ripe stone fruit, citrus zest, subtle floral notes and a clear mineral edge that gives the wine lift and definition. On the palate, it is full-bodied and fruit-driven, yet still retains the elegant, chiselled profile Riesling lovers expect from Kremstal. The schist and iron-rich soils contribute a savoury, stony complexity, while ageing on oak and bâtonnage add roundness, depth and a supple texture. This is a wine with excellent cellaring potential and should develop beautifully over the next 5 years or more.

Production
The grapes come from the Pfeningberg site in Kremstal, where some of the oldest vines are rooted in schist soils rich in iron and red slate. The vineyard’s distinctive terroir gives the Riesling both power and precision, and the fruit is harvested by hand at full ripeness to capture maximum flavour and concentration. After fermentation, the wine matures in oak barrels, with bâtonnage used to build texture, complexity and palate weight.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent food wine, especially with Asian dishes that combine lime, chilli, curry and seafood such as prawns, where its fruit, acidity and mineral backbone can really shine. It also works well with richer white fish dishes, roast poultry or creamy sauces, and is best served well-chilled at around 10–12°C. Decanting is not essential, but a short aeration can help bring out its layered aromatics if opened young.
