Description

Weingut Prinz von Hessen’s 1983 Rheingau Winkeler Dachsberg is a mature German white wine from one of the region’s most respected estates. Hailing from the historic vineyards around Johannisberg, it offers the opportunity to experience the remarkable aging capacity of Rheingau Riesling and the character of a landmark vintage from more than four decades ago.

Tasting Notes
With a mature white-wine colour ranging from deep gold to amber, the wine is likely to show the visual development associated with extended bottle age. Its bouquet may reveal layers of dried citrus, orchard fruit, honey, wax, toasted nuts and subtle mineral or petrol notes, although the exact expression will depend on storage conditions and the individual bottle. On the palate, expect a developed, rounded profile with preserved acidity providing freshness beneath flavours of dried fruit, caramelised citrus, spice and mature mineral tones. A long, gently savoury finish is characteristic of well-aged Rheingau Riesling. At this age, the wine is best enjoyed for its complexity and evolution rather than youthful fruit, and it should be opened with realistic expectations regarding bottle variation and remaining vitality.

Production
The Winkeler Dachsberg vineyard lies in the Rheingau, where steep, sun-exposed sites and the region’s distinctive soils create excellent conditions for Riesling. Prinz von Hessen dedicates the great majority of its vineyards to this variety, reflecting the estate’s focus on expressing the grape’s regional identity. Details of the precise harvest and vinification of this 1983 bottling are not available, but traditional Rheingau Riesling production would have aimed to preserve the grape’s natural acidity and site character while allowing the wine to develop gracefully in bottle.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C, allowing the wine time to open in the glass. Its mature profile would suit roasted poultry, pork with a lightly sweet or savoury glaze, pâté, aged mountain cheeses and dishes featuring mushrooms or caramelised onions. Decanting is not essential, but a careful double-decant may help separate any sediment; for a fragile mature wine, opening the bottle shortly before serving and pouring gently is the safer approach.

Producer
Based in Johannisberg in the Rheingau, Weingut Prinz von Hessen is recognised as one of Germany’s leading Riesling estates. The winery has long been associated with the VDP, Germany’s respected association of quality-focused wine estates, and its vineyards benefit from the Rheingau’s exceptional position near the 50th parallel. With around 95% of its plantings devoted to Riesling, Prinz von Hessen has built a strong reputation for wines that combine regional character, precision and impressive aging potential.
