Description

Weingut Prinz von Hessen’s Rheingau Goldstück Beerenauslese 2011 is a luxurious, naturally sweet Riesling from one of Germany’s most celebrated wine regions. Made from selectively hand-harvested, noble-rot-affected grapes and matured in barriques, it combines concentrated fruit, creamy richness and remarkable freshness. The estate, based in Johannisberg, has been a member of the prestigious VDP association since its foundation.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows a honeyed golden colour with delicate amber reflections. Its expressive nose reveals vanilla, ripe peach and apricot, lifted by fresh citrus notes and the distinctive richness associated with botrytised grapes. On the palate, it is powerful and full-bodied, with generous sweet fruit balanced by bright acidity. Ripe stone fruit, citrus and subtle oak nuances lead to a long, juicy finish. With its concentration, acidity and residual sweetness, this 2011 Beerenauslese has excellent ageing potential and can continue to develop beautifully for many years—provided it is stored in ideal conditions.

Production
The grapes were harvested in late October 2011 from the Rheingau, where Riesling benefits from the region’s distinctive climate and proximity to the Rhine. Only very sweet, noble-rot-affected grapes were selectively hand-picked and sorted again at the sorting table. The must was fermented in new 225-litre barriques, followed by 12 months of maturation on the lees. The wine was then racked off the lees and aged for a further 12 months in barriques, adding depth and discreet vanilla-spiced complexity.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. Its rich fruit and balancing acidity make it a natural partner for foie gras, blue cheese, pâté and refined fruit-based desserts, while it can also complement spicy Asian cuisine and mature hard cheeses. Decanting is not essential, but a short period of aeration in a small carafe can help reveal its layered aromas, particularly when the bottle is young or has been stored for many years.

Producer
Located in Johannisberg in the Rheingau, Weingut Prinz von Hessen is regarded as one of Germany’s important Riesling producers. Around 95% of the estate’s plantings are dedicated to Riesling, reflecting the grape’s exceptional suitability to the region’s vineyards near the 50th parallel. The winery’s long-standing VDP membership and strong national and international recognition underline its commitment to quality and its significance within the Rheingau.
