Description

Weingut Prager Grüner Veltliner Wachau Wachstum Bodenstein Smaragd 2024 is a striking single-site wine with a rare twist: instead of carrying the vineyard’s name, it bears Toni Bodenstein’s own, honoring the man whose clonal work helped shape it. As a Smaragd bottling from Wachau, it sits at the top of the region’s white-wine classification, offering depth, precision, and impressive potential for development.

Tasting Notes
Expect a wine of notable concentration and structure, with a bright, polished appearance and the unmistakable vitality of Grüner Veltliner at its best. The aromatics are likely to be layered and expressive, with classic notes of white pepper, ripe orchard fruit, herbs, and a mineral edge, all supported by the complexity that comes from the vineyard’s genetic diversity. On the palate, Smaragd richness brings breadth and power, balanced by freshness and a firm, saline-tinged core. The wine should show serious length and detail, with enough texture to make it immediately engaging, yet also enough structure to reward cellaring over several years.

Production
This wine comes from Hinter Seiber in Wachau, a site worked with extraordinary attention to clonal diversity. Rather than relying on a narrow selection of vines, Toni Bodenstein has preserved a broader genetic mix from the vineyard, creating a parcel that is unusually adaptable to vintage variation and capable of delivering complexity in the finished wine. Harvest is carried out late to achieve the high must weight required for Smaragd classification, and the grapes are selected from the best fruit only before careful vinification aimed at preserving site character and purity.

Food & Serving
This is a superb match for richly flavored white-meat dishes, roasted poultry, veal, seafood with butter or cream-based sauces, and elegant Asian dishes with a touch of spice. Serve slightly chilled, ideally around 10–12°C, and consider brief decanting if drinking young to allow the wine’s aromatic complexity and structure to open fully.

Producer
Weingut Prager is one of the most respected estates in the Wachau and has long been associated with precise, terroir-driven wines from some of the region’s finest sites. Under Toni Bodenstein’s guidance, the estate has gained particular recognition for its deep understanding of vineyard expression and clonal selection, helping establish Prager as a benchmark producer in Austrian white wine.
