Weingut P.J. Kühn’s Sankt Nikolaus Riesling Großes Gewächs is a distinguished dry white wine from the Rheingau, made from some of the estate’s oldest Riesling vines. Situated close to the Rhine in Mittelheim, the vineyard benefits from reflected sunlight, natural air circulation and the river’s moderating influence, resulting in a wine that combines concentration with freshness. As a Großes Gewächs, it represents one of Germany’s highest classifications for dry, site-specific wines.

Tasting Notes
The wine is expected to show a bright, pale golden appearance, with the depth and structure associated with low-yielding, old-vine Riesling. On the nose, look for ripe citrus, white peach and orchard fruit, complemented by mineral tones and a subtle impression of sandy, calcareous soil. On the palate, Sankt Nikolaus is concentrated yet finely balanced, combining generous fruit with vibrant acidity and a distinctly mineral finish. The proximity of the Rhine helps preserve freshness, while the small berries from the mature vines contribute depth and intensity. With its structure and acidity, the 2022 vintage should develop gracefully over several years, gaining additional complexity with bottle age.

Production
The Sankt Nikolaus vineyard lies close to the Rhine and is characterised by sandy, calcareous loess soils. The estate’s oldest Riesling vines, some more than 65 years old, produce small berries with naturally concentrated flavours. Grapes are carefully harvested by hand and gently pressed over several hours, after which the must is allowed to ferment spontaneously without oenological intervention. The wine is then matured to develop texture, balance and site expression.

Food & Serving
This dry, structured Riesling pairs beautifully with freshwater fish, shellfish, roast poultry and veal, while its freshness also makes it a natural partner for asparagus, creamy vegetable dishes and refined East Asian cuisine. Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C. Decanting is not essential, but a short period of aeration in a carafe can help reveal the wine’s mineral character and layered aromas, particularly when enjoyed young.
