Description

Weingut P.J. Kühn Riesling Sankt Nikolaus Großes Gewächs 2020 is a profound, dry Rheingau Riesling from one of the estate’s most prized sites directly above the Rhine. As a VDP.Großes Gewächs from old vines in the Mittelheimer St. Nikolaus vineyard, it marries depth, precision and a striking sense of place. The combination of river influence, sandy calcareous loess soils and low-yielding, over 65‑year‑old Riesling vines has made this wine one of the flagships of the Kühn family’s biodynamic estate.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Sankt Nikolaus GG shows a bright, luminous lemon-gold colour with subtle green highlights, hinting at both ripeness and tension. The nose is complex and finely etched: ripe stone fruits like peach and mirabelle mingle with citrus zest, green and yellow apple, and layers of crushed slate, wet stone and saline notes from the river influence. Subtle floral hints (white blossom, chamomile) and delicate herbal and smoky nuances emerge with air, underlining the wine’s seriousness and depth. On the palate, this is concentrated yet incredibly poised, with a firm, linear structure and a core of juicy, precise fruit. Expect a vibrant interplay of ripe citrus and stone fruit with a cool, herbal-mineral backbone, supported by tightly woven, mouthwatering acidity. The texture is dense and silky from extended lees contact, while the finish is very long, saline and almost crystalline, leaving impressions of lime peel, crushed rock and fine spice. Built for longevity, this 2020 Großes Gewächs will reward cellaring over 10–15+ years, gaining even more complexity, nuance and harmony.

Production
Mittelheimer St. Nikolaus is a Große Lage that sits immediately above the Rhine, whose broad surface reflects additional sunlight into the vineyard and moderates temperatures throughout the year—warming during cooler spells and cooling in heatwaves. The vines grow on sandy, calcareous loess soils that offer excellent drainage yet good water retention, contributing to both ripeness and finesse in the fruit. Here stand some of the estate’s oldest Riesling vines, many over 65 years old, yielding naturally small, highly concentrated berries. The Kühn family harvests these grapes by hand with meticulous selection, keeping yields low to maximise quality. After a careful, gentle pressing over several hours, the must was allowed to ferment spontaneously with native yeasts, without any oenological additives or interventions. The wine then matured for around 16 months on the full lees, most likely in traditional large casks and/or neutral vessels, adding texture, depth and stability while preserving the purity of the site.

Food & Serving
This powerful, structured dry Riesling pairs beautifully with refined dishes that can match its intensity and minerality. Think roasted or poached turbot, monkfish or halibut, grilled sea bass, or seafood with beurre blanc; elegant poultry dishes, veal in light cream sauces, or fine pork dishes with root vegetables also work superbly. It is equally compelling with sophisticated vegetable cuisine—white asparagus, fennel, celeriac, or mushroom-based dishes, especially with beurre blanc or light jus. Serve at 10–12°C, slightly cooler for an aperitif expression and closer to 12°C at the table to fully unfold its aromas. Decanting young vintages for 30–60 minutes is recommended to open up the nose and integrate the structure, especially if enjoyed within the first few years after release.

Producer
Weingut P.J. Kühn is one of the leading estates in the Rheingau and a benchmark for terroir-driven, biodynamic Riesling in Germany. The Kühn family has been growing vines in Oestrich-Winkel for generations, but it was Peter Jakob and Angela Kühn—now joined by their son Peter Bernhard—who transformed the estate into a pioneering force for organic and later fully biodynamic viticulture, certified by Demeter. By focusing on low yields, meticulous handwork in the vineyard, spontaneous fermentations and long lees aging, they craft wines that are both deeply rooted in their sites and remarkably pure and expressive. Today, P.J. Kühn is widely respected within the VDP and beyond, regularly earning top scores and international acclaim for their Grosses Gewächs bottlings, particularly from renowned sites like Sankt Nikolaus.
