Description
Weingut P.J. Kühn Riesling Oestricher Klosterberg Erste Lage Bio 2022 is a precise, terroir-driven Rheingau Riesling from one of Germany’s most admired biodynamic estates. Sourced from the classified “Erste Lage” Klosterberg vineyard above Oestrich, it captures the tension between depth, texture and stony elegance that has made the Kühns so sought-after among Riesling lovers. Certified organic and biodynamic, this wine is crafted with minimal intervention to let the site speak clearly in the glass. What sets this Riesling apart is its remarkable complexity without reliance on overt primary fruit, instead expressing layers of spice, earth and herbal nuance over a finely etched mineral core. The Oestricher Klosterberg has long been known for wines that go through expressive phases as they mature, opening and closing over time before reaching a beautiful, harmonious peak. In recent years, P.J. Kühn has helped re-define what Rheingau dry Riesling can be, and this bottling is a contemporary benchmark for the style.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Oestricher Klosterberg shows a pale to medium lemon-yellow color with green reflections, hinting at both freshness and concentration. The nose is immediately intricate rather than flashy: think dried orchard fruits and citrus peel interwoven with notes reminiscent of chamomile, wild herbs, hay and subtle honeycomb. Underneath lies a distinct earthy-mineral tone—wet stones, a touch of cool soil and a suggestion of dried flowers and fine tea leaves—more in the vein of Oolong than exuberant fruit.
On the palate, this is a structured, multilayered dry Riesling with a firm backbone of acidity that feels rounded and integrated rather than sharp. Flavors of dried apricot, baked apple skin and preserved lemon mingle with nuances of herbal tea, dried herbs and a faint smokiness from the stony soils. The wine moves with impressive energy and grip across the mid-palate, finishing long, saline and slightly savory, with a gentle phenolic bite that adds texture. Young, it can show phases of openness and reticence, so air is its friend; the 2022 carries clear aging potential of 8–12 years or more, developing greater complexity, honeyed depth and additional spice with time in bottle.
Production
The Oestricher Klosterberg is a classified Erste Lage site in the Rheingau, a south- to southwest-facing slope above the village of Oestrich, influenced by the nearby Rhine River. The soils are typically a mix of loess, loam and marl with stony elements (including quartzite and other rock fragments), providing both water retention and excellent drainage—ideal conditions for Riesling that combine ripeness with pronounced mineral tension. At Weingut P.J. Kühn, the vineyards are farmed organically and biodynamically, with great emphasis on soil vitality, biodiversity and low yields. Grapes for this wine are harvested by hand, with meticulous selection of healthy, optimally ripe bunches. In the cellar, fermentations are carried out spontaneously with native yeasts, often in large traditional wooden casks. The wine typically spends extended time on its fine lees to build texture and complexity, with minimal intervention and modest sulfur additions, in order to preserve the natural expression of the Klosterberg terroir.
Food & Serving
This dry Rheingau Riesling pairs beautifully with refined, subtly aromatic dishes that can mirror its complexity and structure. Think classic pairings like pan-seared or poached white fish, scallops, trout or char, as well as light poultry dishes with herb-inflected sauces, veal in cream-based preparations, or pork with apple and fennel. It is also an excellent partner for vegetable-focused cuisine—white asparagus, leek tart, roasted root vegetables, or mushroom dishes—and can stand up to gentle spice in Asian-inspired plates, particularly those featuring ginger, lemongrass or soy-based glazes. Serve at 9–11°C in a white wine or medium-sized Riesling glass. While the wine is already engaging in its youth, it benefits from being opened in advance; a brief decanting of 30–60 minutes helps it unwind and reveal its full aromatic and textural spectrum.
