Description
From one of Rheingau’s most respected biodynamic estates, the Weingut P.J. Kühn Riesling Hallgartener Hendelberg Erste Lage Bio 2022 is a finely etched, terroir-driven dry Riesling. Sourced from a steep, slate-based hillside above Hallgarten, this wine captures the tension, purity and expressive minerality that have made Kühn a benchmark for modern German Riesling. Certified organic and crafted with patience, it is both immediately engaging and built to evolve in bottle.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Hallgartener Hendelberg Riesling shows a bright, pale lemon color with green reflections, hinting at its youthful freshness and crisp structure. The nose is initially a touch reserved, then opens with a little air to reveal layers of citrus zest, green apple and ripe stone fruit, interwoven with wild herbs, white blossom and a distinct slatey, smoky minerality.
On the palate, this is precise and taut, with a linear acidity that drives the wine from front to back. Juicy notes of lime, grapefruit and white peach are wrapped around a saline, almost crystalline mineral core, reflecting the phyllite slate soils. Subtle herbal nuances and a delicate floral lift add complexity, while the texture—enhanced by extended lees contact—feels fine, silky and persistent rather than heavy. The finish is long, dry and mouthwatering, suggesting excellent aging potential. While already charming when given some air, this 2022 should develop beautifully over the next 8–12 years, gaining more depth, spice and tertiary complexity.
Production
The Hendelberg vineyard rises steeply to around 300 meters above sea level on the slopes of the Taunus, making it one of the true steep sites in the otherwise gentler middle Rheingau landscape, with inclines up to 44%. The soils are dominated by weathered phyllite slate, which naturally limits yields and drives deep root growth, giving the Riesling a pronounced mineral character. Many of the vines here are up to 40–50 years old, farmed organically and biodynamically by the Kühn family with meticulous hand work and strict selection at harvest. Grapes are picked by hand at optimal ripeness, gently pressed and fermented—typically spontaneously with native yeasts—in stainless steel and/or large traditional wooden casks. As with all Kühn Rieslings nowadays, the wine benefits from extended aging on the lees for around a year, adding texture, polish and complexity before bottling with minimal intervention to preserve authenticity of site.
Food & Serving
This Erste Lage Riesling is a versatile food partner that shines with fine, subtly aromatic dishes. Think ceviche or lightly cured fish, sashimi, grilled sea bass with herbs, or classic pairings like trout with almond butter. It also works beautifully with Asian-inspired cuisine—sushi, lightly spiced Thai salads, or Vietnamese dishes with fresh herbs—alongside white asparagus, poultry in light cream sauces, or goat’s and soft cow’s milk cheeses. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally at 9–11°C (48–52°F), to allow the aromatics and texture to unfold. Young bottles benefit from a quick decant or at least 20–30 minutes in the glass, especially if the wine initially appears a bit shy; with some air, the full spectrum of fruit, herbs and mineral notes emerges.
