Weingut P.J. Kühn Riesling Doosberg Großes Gewächs 2020 is a profound, dry Rheingau Riesling from one of the region’s benchmark biodynamic estates. Sourced from the prestigious Doosberg site, this wine shows the depth, finesse and quiet power that have made Kühn’s GGs some of the most sought-after in Germany. Released with extra bottle age, it arrives already harmonised, yet still with the energy and structure to age beautifully.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine is a bright, luminous straw-yellow with greenish highlights, hinting at both freshness and concentration. The nose opens slowly and precisely: ripe citrus (grapefruit, Meyer lemon), white peach and mirabelle, followed by cooler notes of green apple, herbal spice, crushed stone, fennel seed and a delicate smoky, flinty edge that speaks clearly of its terroir. On the palate, the Doosberg GG 2020 is dry, tightly woven and elegantly powerful. A vivid, linear acidity runs through the wine, wrapped in a dense yet finely textured core of stone fruit, citrus zest and salty minerality. Hints of chamomile, lime peel and wet slate linger on a very long, focused finish. Still youthful, it is already beautifully composed, with great promise for further complexity over the next 10–15 years and beyond under good cellaring conditions.

Production
The Doosberg vineyard lies on the eastern side of Oestrich, stretching from the banks of the Rhine up to around 150 metres above sea level. Here, deep, carbonate-rich loess-loam overlays hard quartzite rock, giving both water-holding capacity and a pronounced mineral backbone to the wines. Weingut P.J. Kühn farms these old Riesling vines biodynamically, with low yields and meticulous hand selection at harvest to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes are used. Fermentation typically takes place with native yeasts, and the Großes Gewächs spends an extended period on the full lees, then on the fine lees, before being bottled and given further time to rest in bottle. This patient, low-intervention approach builds texture, aromatic complexity and a calm, deep expression of the site.

Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic Riesling that shines with refined, flavourful dishes. Pair it with salt-crusted or poached turbot, roasted cod with beurre blanc, grilled king prawns, scallops, or classic German pairings such as zander with Riesling sauce. It also works beautifully with veal in light cream sauces, roasted poultry with herbs, and subtly spiced Asian cuisine (think ginger, lemongrass, or lightly spicy Thai curries). Serve at about 10–12 °C; for maximum expression, decant gently 30–60 minutes before serving in large white-wine glasses to allow the wine’s layers of fruit, spice and mineral depth to unfurl.
