Description

Weingut Pichler-Krutzler Riesling Loiben 2024 is a precise, mineral-driven white from one of the Wachau’s most exciting modern estates. Sourced from the terraced vineyards around the village of Loiben, it captures the pure, crystalline character that has made Austrian Riesling a benchmark for dry, aromatic whites. This cuvée stands out for its clarity, tension and effortless drinkability, offering a classic Wachau profile at a highly approachable level.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a pale lemon color with greenish reflections, signaling its youth and freshness. The nose is clean and expressive, opening with white peach, green apple and lime zest, followed by hints of white flowers, wet stone and a subtle herbal lift. On the palate, it is dry, sleek and finely etched, with lively acidity that keeps everything tense and vibrant. Citrus and stone-fruit flavors dominate—think lemon, grapefruit and ripe pear—layered over a pronounced stony, saline minerality that is very typical of Loiben. The finish is long and refreshing, leaving a mouthwatering impression. Enjoyable now for its precision and energy, it has the structure to develop additional complexity over the next 3–7 years, gaining more rounded fruit and gentle honeyed, smoky nuances with bottle age.

Production
The Riesling Loiben 2024 is sourced from vineyards around the village of Loiben in the Wachau, where steep, terraced slopes of gneiss, granite and sandy loess overlook the Danube. This rocky, well-drained terroir, combined with the river’s moderating influence and significant diurnal temperature swings, promotes slow, even ripening and excellent aromatic intensity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure only healthy, optimally ripe clusters are selected. In the cellar, Pichler-Krutzler favors a gentle, low-intervention approach: careful pressing, cool fermentation—mostly in stainless steel—to preserve purity and freshness, and maturation on fine lees to add texture and subtle complexity without masking the site’s mineral character.

Food & Serving
This Riesling is an excellent match for freshwater fish, sushi and sashimi, ceviche, or delicately spiced Asian dishes such as Thai salads and Vietnamese spring rolls. It also pairs beautifully with shellfish, light poultry, goat cheese and vegetable-based dishes like asparagus or citrus-dressed salads. Serve well-chilled, ideally at 8–10 °C, to highlight its aromatic brightness and acidity. Decanting is not essential, but a brief 15–20 minutes in a carafe before serving can help the wine open up and reveal more of its floral and mineral nuances.

Producer
Weingut Pichler-Krutzler is a relatively young but already highly respected estate in the Wachau, founded by the husband-and-wife team of winemaker Erich Krutzler and Elisabeth Pichler, daughter of one of the region’s most renowned Riesling and Grüner Veltliner producers. Drawing on deep family roots and experience in top Austrian and international wineries, the couple has quickly established a reputation for wines that are precise, terroir-driven and uncompromising in quality. Working primarily in the famous villages of Loiben and surrounding sites, Pichler-Krutzler focuses on expressing the nuance of each vineyard through careful viticulture and a restrained, transparent winemaking style, making them one of the key names to watch in the modern Wachau landscape.
