Description
Weingut Pichler-Krutzler Riesling Loiben 2022 shows a very different face of Wachau Riesling: instead of sheer power and high alcohol, this is all about precision, elegance and detail. Sourced from the Loiben basin, it focuses on clarity of fruit, filigree structure and a finely etched mineral backbone. This cuvée highlights a more contemporary interpretation of Wachau Riesling, proving that the region can deliver both depth and drinkability in one glass.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shines a bright, pale lemon with green reflections, hinting at its freshness and youthful energy. The nose is immediately inviting, with fine, ripe stone-fruit notes of white peach and apricot, joined by yellow apple and subtle hints of light red berries. Underneath sits a delicate, smoky-mineral spice and a cool, stony character that clearly speaks of primary rock soils.
On the palate, the Riesling is beautifully balanced, walking the line between ripe, juicy fruit and a lively, mouthwatering acidity. Flavors of peach, nectarine and yellow apple are wrapped in a salty, almost crystalline minerality, giving the wine tension and drive. There is plenty of energy and push across the mid-palate, followed by a long, precise finish with a touch of gentle, spicy warmth. Despite its concentration, the wine feels light on its feet and highly drinkable, inviting sip after sip. Enjoyable now for its vibrancy, it also has the structure and acidity to evolve gracefully over the next 5–8 years, gaining complexity and more pronounced mineral notes.
Production
The grapes for this Riesling come from vineyards in and around Loiben in the Wachau, where steep terraces, poor, stony primary rock (gneiss and granite) and the interplay of warm Danube influences and cool night air from the Wachau valley shape a distinctive, mineral-driven style. The fruit is typically hand-harvested in small batches to ensure optimal ripeness and careful selection in the vineyard. After a gentle pressing, the must is clarified by sedimentation and fermented at controlled temperatures, mainly in stainless steel, to preserve aromatic purity and the precise, linear character of Riesling. Aging on fine lees adds texture and depth without masking the clear expression of terroir.
Food & Serving
This Riesling is an excellent partner for refined, subtly aromatic dishes: think freshwater fish such as trout or char, ceviche, sushi and sashimi, or delicately spiced Asian cuisine with ginger, lemongrass or mild chili heat. It also pairs beautifully with white asparagus, light poultry dishes, goat cheese and vegetable-based starters. Serve well chilled at around 8–10 °C to emphasize its freshness and mineral tension. Decanting is not strictly necessary, but a short time in a carafe or in the glass will help the aromas open and show more layers of fruit and spice.
Producer
Weingut Pichler-Krutzler is a relatively young but already highly regarded estate in the Wachau, founded by Elisabeth Pichler and Erich Krutzler, who bring together two important wine dynasties from the Wachau and southern Burgenland. From the outset, the winery has focused on precise, terroir-driven expressions of Grüner Veltliner and Riesling from some of the region’s best sites, including parcels around Loiben. Their approach combines meticulous work in the vineyards, low yields and a restrained, minimal-intervention style in the cellar, resulting in wines that are both concentrated and finely structured. In a short time, Pichler-Krutzler has become one of the leading names in the area, regularly earning strong critical praise for the clarity, elegance and aging potential of their Wachau wines.
