Description
Weingut Pichler-Krutzler Grüner Veltliner Dürnstein 2024 is a fresh, characterful white wine from the Wachau, made from relatively young vines rooted in the alluvial soils along the Danube. Completely dry and lively on the palate, it offers an approachable introduction to the style of Elisabeth Pichler-Krutzler and Erich Krutzler. Grüner Veltliner is Austria’s signature white grape, and this bottling captures its classic combination of freshness, spice and mineral expression.
Tasting Notes
Pale and bright in appearance, the wine opens with an inviting nose of spruce, freshly cut grass and bay leaf, complemented by green mirabelle plum and fresh plum. Subtle notes of baked apple, hazelnut and smoky minerality add depth to the otherwise crisp, refreshing bouquet.
The palate is juicy and charming, with lively acidity, a completely dry finish and a fine, stony character. Its moderate alcohol and youthful energy make it particularly enjoyable now, when its freshness and expressive fruit are at their most immediate.
Production
The vines, aged between 10 and 25 years, grow in the Dürnstein basin where the Danube forms a gentle bend. The alluvial soils, composed of well-draining sand and gravel deposited by the river, contribute freshness and mineral definition. An early harvest helps preserve the wine’s balance and keeps the alcohol moderate. Following a short maceration, the wine ferments spontaneously and matures in stainless-steel tanks, allowing its varietal character and vibrant freshness to remain at the forefront.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. This versatile Grüner Veltliner pairs beautifully with fresh fish, seafood, sushi, asparagus, green vegetables and salads, while its subtle spice also complements schnitzel, poultry and lighter pork dishes. It is ready to enjoy without decanting; serving it in a good white-wine glass will help reveal its herbal, fruity and mineral nuances.
Producer
Weingut Pichler-Krutzler is the collaboration of Elisabeth Pichler and Erich Krutzler, whose wines are rooted in the distinctive landscapes of Austria’s Wachau region. Their collection combines precise vineyard expression with a fresh, elegant style, and this Dürnstein Grüner Veltliner serves as an accessible introduction to the estate’s wines.
